Excellent old adventure film
Faithful re-telling of the well-paced and thrilling plot of Dumas' novel. Robert Donat is very good as unfairly convicted Edmond Dantes who after a long stretch in prison emerges to exact his revenge in 1830s France. I had never seen (or unfortunately even heard of) Robert Donat before which is clearly my loss when it comes to swashbuckling and noble adventure actors. The print sometimes makes this seem almost like a film of the silent era, mainly due to the color contrasts and people's very pale faces. But this does not matter: the actors neither move, speak or (over)act like they do in those films. The sound is also very good, so much so that the subtitles are not needed.Overall, this is a thrilling and stirring adventure film. Five stars easily (which would be 5+ if they would re-master this film as they have done with the wonderful "Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland).

Very good.
Wanted to see this film after watching the more recent film "V For Vendetta". In which The Count of Monte Cristo appeared in part. It was Vs favourite film. Enjoyed it very much. Nothing nicer on a horrible rainy day than watching an old black and white film.

FINALLY!!!
Even back when all that existed was the original Nostalgia Merchant VHS, this has always been my favorite version which is curious to a degree, because it is probably the least faithful adaptation of the story to the screen. I have never heard of Hen's Tooth Video before this, but believe me, they have earned my deepest respect by bringing original UNCUT classics such as this, Louis Hayward's Man In The Iron Mask, and Fairbanks Jr.`s The Corsican Brothers (coming in April) to DVD.Hen's Tooth did a pretty good job cleaning this up from the original fine grain print for what they had to work with. I'm sure if a major company got their hands on it, it would have silkened a bit more. However, I can't complain. This is as crisp and clean as I've ever seen it.Donat's Edmund Dantes is like Connery's James Bond. Yes, there have been other fine actors who carried the role but nothing quite like this. He has always been a fair-skinned actor. Given that plus the fine grain film and soft focus lens in the production, it's like watching a ghost. The additional cast of villains is just solid. Calhern's DeVillefort is just chilling, and Walbern's Danglars is the perfect skunk. Sidney Blackmer playing the role of the Spaniard Mondego definitely seemed miscast at first, but it worked well overall with the atmosphere. Also, if you're a nitpicky fan of the book, and have never seen this, the story adjustments may well knock your head back. I won't reveal too much, although I will say that the fates of the three villains (not four; Caderousse is completely absent) are completely flipped around from both the book and the Chamberlain version from 1975. It was certainly "Hollywoodized", and the film moves along at a surprisingly fast clip. Given the time it was made (1934), that was a common tactic in filmmaking. Overall, getting this DVD in the mail, I feel like Edmund finally getting the Spada fortune!

terrible
This was the absolute worst quality dvd I've ever seen. I threw it away. Not worth a blank disc. I'd give it 1/100 of a star if that were possible.

FINALLY!!! I FOUND THIS GREAT FILM!!!
I have searched for years for this version of the Count Of Monte Cristo!!! This was the first version I viewed of the Alexander Dumas classic. I was 11 years old. I am now 64 years old and finally I have found this version. Even though this version does not follow the book by Hollywood standards, I have always loved this version. I could not wait to view it and I was so happy. I own other versions of this movie that I also really love like Richard Chamberlain and Jim Caviezial's versions both equally as good and both much more true to the book. In the book, there was a fourth villain which was not really missed in these versions. As a literature teacher, of course I know that all great great literature adapted to film will ultimately leave out or change events that are in the books. Their are time constraints in film and some things are changed to garner more livelier entertainment. Nevertheless, I completely enjoy the films and the company that releases these classics, such as the Man In The Iron Mask starring Louis Hayward, and the Corsican Brothers, is doing me a great favor in releasing these old classics. As soon as I received this dvd, I put it in and began to watch it which led to me watching the other versions one right after another.
