FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Assited by a fellowship of heroes, Frodo Baggins plunges into a perilous trek to take the mystical One Ring to Mount Doom so it and its magical power can be destroyed and never possessed by evil Lord Sauron. The astonishing journey begins in the first film of director/cowriter Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy that redefined fantasy filmmaking. This imaginative foray into J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth won four Academy Awards and earned 13 total nominations, including Best Picture.THE TWO TOWERS Frodo and Samwise press on toward Mordor. Gollum insists on being the guide. Can anyone so corrupted by the ring be trusted? Can Frodo, increasingly under the sway of the ring, even trust himself? Meanwhile, Aragorn, drawing closer to his kingly destiny, rallies forces of good for the battles that must come. Director Peter Jackson delivers an amazing second movie that won two Academy Awards and earned six total nominations, including Best Picture. The journey continues. So do the astonishing spectacle and splendor.RETURN OF THE KING It is time. For Frodo to overcome the wickedness of Gollum, the horrifying attack of colossal arachnid Shelob and the soul-twisting allure of a ring that resists destruction. For Aragorn to take up the sword of his forebears and the crown of his birthright. For the mighty clash that Wizard Gandalf calls “the great battle of our time. ” And for the inspired culmination of the fi lms based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary classic. For the third time, a Rings movie was a Best Picture Academy Award nominee, and for the first time it claimed that prize (plus 10 more). The King deserves its crown.AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Follow title character Bilbo Baggins, who – along with the Wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield – is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Their journey will take them into the Wild and through treacherous lands inhabited by Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as by a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer. Along the path, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even himself, he also gains possession of a “precious” ring tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways he cannot begin to imagine.THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG THE HOBBIT BILBO BAGGINS, the Wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, continue their journey to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Along the way, they encounter skin-changer Beorn; giant Spiders of Mirkwood; Wood-elves led by Legolas, Tauriel and King Thranduil; and a mysterious Man named Bard, who smuggles them into Lake-town. Finally reaching the Lonely Mountain, they face their greatest danger – the Dragon Smaug.BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Thorin Oakensheild and the Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon Smaug upon Lake-town. Meanwhile, Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs to attack the Lonely Mountain, and Bilbo Baggins finds himself fighting for his life as five great armies go to war. As darkness converges, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed.

Bare-Bones, but Beautiful Blu-Ray Transfer, and No Switching Discs!
The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy [Blu-ray]This set is absolutely fantastic. It's a simple, yet elegant set for fans of the theatrical editions of the films. For those that may not know, there are two editions of each film: the theatrical edition, and the extended edition. The theatrical edition is what you watched in the theater. The extended edition contains many more scenes that originally didn't make the final cut, but were added in later to expand the storytelling. This set contains the theatrical editions. The extended editions are great and all, but they run for a very long time (up to 3+ hours). Not all of us have the stamina to watch a movie that goes on for 4 hours. Besides, the theatrical editions are great already.Additionally, the extended editions are so long that they actually require you to switch discs to continue watching the movie. When I was a kid, I remember my parents having Titanic on VHS. The movie was so long, it had to be put on two VHS tapes, and you had to switch tapes during the middle of the film. That's the same case for the extended editions of Lord of the Rings for both DVD and Blu-ray. Even though Blu-ray discs hold a lot of memory, the extended editions take up so much that they had to place the films on two discs each. You don't have to worry about that with the theatrical editions. The entire theatrical edition fits on a single disc, so no having to get up and switch discs. In my opinion, this makes for a better viewing experience. As for the packaging, it comes in an elegantly designed cardboard sleeve. The cover art is attractive and features several of the most well-liked characters of the films. The films themselves are placed inside a blu-ray case. The great thing is that they're not stacked on top of each other. Instead, each disc has its own space; they're placed on "plastic pages", so to speak. However, do know that this set does not contain all the special features that the extended editions do. This set is more "bare-bones", so to speak. You get basic features like subtitles, but nothing like a making-of documentary or behind-the-scenes clips. This is really intended moreso for people who just want the films. If you're fine with that, and you don't need all that extra stuff, this set is perfect.

Great box set, can’t pass up the price!!!
So I just received this in the mail today. And it wasn’t until after I started writing my review, that I saw the other reviews, stating it was in the European format for the special features. I was really bummed out and thought I might have to return it. But after I pulled out the first three disks on “the hobbit, an unexpected journey”, all of the special features play on my American Blu-ray player. So maybe they changed the format lately, or I got the American version I guess.Anyways, I am throughly thrilled with this box set. My only complaint is that it was sent in a typical Amazon prime padded sleeve, and the edges of the box were a little smashed. It is nothing serious, just my OCD in wanting a perfect package. All videos play, and they are in amazing Blu-ray clarity. The booklet that comes with the box set gives you the list of each disks’ docs, and the many hours of extras, verging on excessive. For a true Tolkien/LOTR/Hobbit fan, this is a must have. For $100 you can’t pass this up!!!

Amazing, but US buyers will need a multi region player
Films are amazing but the elephant in the room with reviews on here are people having issues playing disks/special features. For the folks in the US, you'll need a multi-region Blu-ray/DVD player.

Greatest story ever told
Just as an fyi. These are NOT the extended versions. These are the theatrical release, meaning this is the normal versions originally released in theaters. I've seen the extended versions already, and as much as I would love to get it, that box set was out of my willing to pay price range. You don't miss a whole lot you'll still get the full story from this set. Each movie comes on its own disk. No extras just the movie and menu. Has your usual audio and subtitle and scene selection settings. Even though these are DVD's, the picture and sound quality are still really good. Compared to the more expensive Blue Ray edition there isn't much of a noticeable difference. Price point for this is a great deal as well. Grab this set, get your friends together and take the journey through Middle Earth.

JRR Tolkien series brought to life!
This 6 movie set containing the trilogies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is an adventure romp that will carry you along wondering where the time went. The Hobbit covers the adventures of Bilbo Baggins when the wizard Gandalf involves him with the quest of Thorin Oakenshield and his dwarven fellows. The Lord of the Rings continues what began in the prior set and the trials of Frodo Baggins and his three cohorts. With the help of the Fellowship that assist in the journey the vastness of the lands troubles enthrall while viewing. This set of six movies is a wonder of cinematography and grand story telling. I recommend this for any Tolkien fans or fantasy in general though I think many who like epic dramas may also enjoy.

Box Arrived Damaged, Mix of Blu-Ray and DVD
The set was not packaged well and arrived damaged, which is unfortunate. I haven't gone through everything, but the discs seem to be in order at least. One box had some broken off plastic pieces in it, but appears ok other than that. Also, I did not see the warning about the "Playback Region B/2" when I ordered, but so far the couple of discs I have tried have worked just fine. Another thing to note is that even though this is marked as Blu-Ray set, a lot of the special features discs are actually in DVD format. All the movies appear to be in the Blu-Ray. Overall a good replacement for my original LOTR extended box set with some scratched discs, but the quality control was a little lacking. There's also some typos on the back of the box as well.
