South Shore 4-Shelf Storage Bookcase, Gray Oak

Overall, this is a great piece for the price. I plan to buy the matching shelves once I move into my permanent apartment. Here's a breakdown: ASSEMBLY: Easy! The instructions are easy to follow, especially if you've ever put furniture together before. I recommend that you place all the pieces together BEFORE you screw anything together (just hand twist the screws to hold it in place so the pieces don't fall off) The instructions recommend having two people help you, plus using a Phillips, Robertson and a hammer. I only needed the Phillips and the hammer, plus I assembled it myself while my roommate was outside cleaning her car (really, it was that fast). QUALITY: The shelves are MUCH sturdier than another similar shelf I bought from Target for about the same price. This one is structurally sound even before you put the backing on and I've found a lot of other shelves are wobbly until you nail the backing so +stars for that! Also, the extra support on the lower and upper shelves make it seem like a nicer piece that it actually is. The plastic caps to cover the screws aren't noticeable from even a close look and at first glance, it doesn't look cheap at all. The Espresso/Chocolate is a great deep dark brown that matches my leather sofa perfectly and the veneer is glossy and looks great. It holds ALL of my books, including some heavy text books, the shelves are completely full and no sagging or leaning. It even comes with felt squares for the bottom so I don't have to worry about scratching the hardwood floors when I move it around. SHIPPING & COMPLETENESS OF KIT: Can't beat Amazon's Free 2-day shipping (It does take an extra couple of days to process, but it was still here a day earlier than promised) arrived with one minor scratch on the inside, but it's in a place where no one would ever see it, so it doesn't bother me. The box was damaged en route, but the product was untouched (save for the small scratch mentioned). All the pieces were included, plus some extra hardware. There are even extra shelf pegs if you wanted to add an additional shelf or if you lose/break the ones that are being used.

Love these bookcases! I have five of them---three of the tall 5-shelf, one of the medium 4-shelf, and two of the tall, narrow ones. I also have the tall, narrow version in white. (Plus, I bought a set of the matching nightstands!) Not one of these bookcases has let me down. They're relatively easy to assemble, especially if you're familiar with do-it-yourself furniture. Each one took my husband about an hour, give or take. The 4-shelf one was the easiest, since it's short. He assembled it on his own, without any help from me, which should tell you how easy they are to put together. The color is a gorgeous deep cherry wood. Very rich and luminous. There's one shelf that's permanently attached, while the others can be adjusted. The adjustable pegs are clear, so they vanish against the wood. There's a narrow decorative panel that goes across the top, kind of a lip that fits underneath the top of the bookcase. It's a simple design detail, but it looks great! However, it limits the height of the objects you can place on the top shelf. My husband thought it was a pain to install, so the first bookcase he put together doesn't have the decorative panel. I asked him to install them on the others, though, just because I think it looks a lot nicer. (And now my bookcases don't quite match, which irks me deeply. I'm a bit OCD about things matching.) The bookcase includes a safety bracket, which you can screw to a stud in your wall, to prevent it from tipping over. This is recommended if you have pets that jump on the furniture, or young children that might try to climb the bookcase, or if you live in earthquake country, or if your floors aren't level. NOTE: Don't attach the bracket the way the directions show, or the bracket will be glaringly obvious. The bracket is steel, it doesn't match the wood color, so you don't want to put it inside the bookcase, where it'll show. Instead, attach it to the top of the bookcase, where you can hide it behind something, like a decorative box, or whatever. (I looked up a video on how to do this, and it makes a lot more sense than the way the directions show!) I can't stress enough how lovely these bookcases are. My bedroom used to be a disaster zone, filled with piles of books, and boxes filled with books, all over the place. Now I have three tall bookcases and one medium bookcase, which makes the bedroom look very sophisticated and elegant, especially since I didn't fill every shelf to bursting. I left some open gaps, and I put some candles and decorative objects in the corners, so they look really nice. No more boxes of books! (Well, except in the garage. . . .) My bedroom now looks amazing! Thank you, South Shore! Five stars and highly recommended to anyone who needs a high-quality bookcase.

The particle board seems to be especially low density compared to some other brands like Sauder which uses slightly smaller particle sizes. This unit will break apart along the bottom edge if not carefully moved as chips pull out. You will need to be extra careful on carpet as the wood catches on the fibers. They include felt pads for those on hardwood. This unit was not damaged, but I ordered two other products from South Shore that did have damaged parts. South Shore customer service is responsive and ship replacements promptly, but that takes several extra days. The buttons on the screws stick out visible on the sides. I wish those screws were recessed and had plugs instead of the larger plastic buttons. The buttons do not sit flush, instead there's about a 0.5mm gap between them at the sides. They will knock off very easily as they are just pressed into the screw face with a tiny peg. You could alternately paint the faces of the screws on your own and that may be a better solution before you lose the buttons. South Shore seems to include plenty of extra hardware in case you lose a screw or a peg. Everything fit together well and assembly was fairly easy. It's hard to be too critical at the price, but the extra low density and flaky bottom edges concern me along with the cheap buttons on external facing screws, which could be improved with a tweak to the design. If they veneered the bottom edge it would probably be less prone to flaking away and last longer.

I was surprised by the quality of this shelf. Super sturdy and it was packaged perfectly. There was no damage to it at all. Also it was easy to put together. I was expecting a cheap Walmart quality shelf but this is so much better. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Lo utilizo de librero. Como al año se empezaron a doblar las repisas por el peso de los libros. Es mejor comprarlo solo si no se le pondrán cosas pesadas.
