I haven’t noticed pilling because that usually happens with washing and these cannot be put in a washing machine. I found getting a child play mat and putting a child blanket down over the mat is a better for my Guinea pigs play area. This way I can throw the blanket in the wash and easily wipe down the play mat.

Q: Can thia be used in place of a fleece blanket at the bottom of the cage?

In my experience - no, it cannot. It cannot be easily washed and there are some gaps where the seams don't match together perfectly. It isn't very useful- it is also thin and not very cushioned. I am using it under a playpen for my guinea pigs where there is a waterproof liner so it won't get soiled. If I hadn't opened it I would have sent it back. I find it easiest to use a padded fleece liner- I bought a good quality one and I've had it for several months- it's holding up well with being washed in laundry bags that help protect it during washes.
