This is a beautiful book. Saw a copy on the coffee table of my in-laws and decided I had to have one for myself. Makes a nice gift book for people who truly love books and reading. Interesting and in-depth discussion of what seems to be the whole world history of the greatest books ever. Has a nice feel, solid, good quality paper and vivid illustrations. I don't buy many "coffee table" type books but this one is a gem. It makes me want to go out and get many of the books or if I have them, to read them today. That makes it a five as it inspires you -- in the antique sense of "breathing the breath of life" into you, as it makes you want to expand yourself.

This beautiful, large size album sets out to present and discuss some sixty books that have marked history, from Antiquity to the 20th century. Though the Anglosphere is favoured to some degree, there is a definite opening to other cultures, notably European, with references to books in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, etc. A very wide range of genres is covered and, for instance, The Dead Sea Scrolls, “Das Kapital” and “The Wizard of Oz” are all included. The books are presented chronologically, grouped in five time periods. At least two pages are vested to each, often four, sometimes six. The text is brief and to the point. It touches the author’s biography, explores the contents of the work and examines its historical impact. However, what makes this book truly outstanding is the abundance and quality of its colour illustrations, excerpts of each work reviewed. The extracts of Audubon’s “Birds of America” are for instance positively striking. Overall, this offering is warmly recommended to all, especially those who appreciate books, history, or the diversity of human cultures.

O único porém é o fato de que as informações sobre essas obras são um tanto superficiais e resumidas, como um almanaque para apreciadores de livros antigos. Dento dessa proposta, o resultado é excelente, mas alguns leitores - como eu - podem sentir falta de um conteúdo escrito tão consistente quanto o visual.

Very happy with my purchase. I got this book used from a reseller on Amazon, and it turned out to be in fine, just like new condition. Beautiful edition, very information, an excellent book overall.
