Good instructions, poor everything else
Update: After working through several other macrame books, I am upgrading this from 2 to 3 stars. Although all of the criticisms below still apply, this book is superior to others in terms of the clarity of its instructions and knot guidance. I also bought the other popular macrame book out right now (with the black macarame piece on the cover) and found its instructions to be just awful. I think the key to this book is to ignore instructions related to dowel width and replace materials listed with similar items. I still wish they had more realistic projects in the book, but at least it is easy to make the useful ones they do have.I am an absolute beginner who has never tied a single macrame knot, so I was looking for a book that would be a good introduction to the craft. Unfortunately, I find this book almost useless. It requires materials that are difficult to get or need to be cut (for example, a 36.5" dowel rod - not exactly a typical size). The weird thing is that even the website listed in the book doesn't have the necessary materials for many of these projects (though you can buy things the authors have made, so maybe it's just a promotional link). There is a single unlabeled page where the materials are shown - otherwise there is little to no guidance as to what each thing actually is. And finally, I find many of the projects silly; it is really unlikely that I'm going to make myself an indoor swing or a macrame deck chair (which requires me to find a deck chair frame of 35 3/4 x 38 1/8 x 26 3/8 or somehow adjust the macrame panel to fit, not exactly a beginner's task).I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star because there are a few projects that will be worth trying, once I somehow find the proper dowel size and wooden-looking cane rings (seriously, google "cane ring macrame" and try to find the sizes described in the book - there are so few places that sell them at all that the link to this book is the third result in the search (and yes, you can search the more general "macrame ring" and find something similar, but this book specifically calls them cane rings, a term that doesn't appear to be used widely)). I have a ton of craft books and the best ones all have easy to find materials, clear instructions, and useful projects - this book falls far short in every category. I would not buy this again.

Nice book, but much too advanced for beginners
This book is nice, however, it's for someone much more focused on macrame. It doesn't even tell you the two basic knots or how to finish a piece. The projects in the book are very cool, but I'd need more assistance other than my mom to help me with them, mom's short on pationts and I'm short of vision, that doesn't make a good combo... lol Nice book, but I wouldn't say for beginners at all.

It makes you think
When I was a kid in the late 60s I had received a macramé kit for X-mas and for quite a few years I made various items from belts to bags. I had always dreamed of making a hammock using macramé. This year I started using some of my old macramé books and decided it was time to buy some newer books. And I am so very glad that this was one of them. It has an idea for a hanging shelf that had me in my shed finding the wooden bases for some old CD racks that I had reused in the garden. These 3 wooden bases became a 3-shelf hanging display. And I'm finally going to try my hand at making a macramé hammock using one of the decorative panel ideas using cotton cord.

Fun projects with well detailed instructions & pictures!
I found some beginner plant hangers I am looking forward to making. When I become a pro, I’ll be making that deck chair - love it

Great book for a first timer!
I have used this book to learn how to macrame, and the directions on how to make the knots are easy to understand and the projects are fun. My only complaint is that for a lot of the projects, the lengths of cord they tell you to cut are excessive and result in a lot of waste.

Very good for beginners
Bought twice as gifts. Both women love the book as it has practical and useful projects for beginners. Excellent, clear instructions. The very best book I have found.

Disappointing
I don't think that this book is very good for beginners, maybe confident beginners and beyond, while there are projects for the beginner, I feel that the instructions may not be enough, I am a visual learner and the lack of picture instructions would not be helpful.I wouldn't have purchased this book if I'd been able to see it beforehand and I did try the sample first, but it only showed writing and some of the knots. I'm sure it will sit some and has some good ideas in it, hence the 4 stars, just not my cup of tea

Beginners macrame
The book still seems to use complicated patterns for a complete beginner

My first attempt
I found this book a great place to start macramé. Find something you like or want to make and go for it. Although i measured the cord carefully i did have quiet a bit of wast at the end.
