Perfect motion switch for laundry rooms and pantries
Kasa Smart Motion Sensor Switch – Single Pole, Neutral Wire Required, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi While most of my home runs on TP-Link Tapo switches and outlets, Tapo didn’t have the perfect solution for a couple spots in the house. That’s where this Kasa motion sensor switch came in and it worked perfectly. I installed these in the laundry room and pantry, which are two places where motion control just makes sense. Being able to walk into the laundry room with your hands full and have the lights automatically turn on is extremely convenient. The same goes for the pantry when coming home with groceries. The motion detection works reliably and the lights automatically turn off after the preset time with no motion, so there’s no need to worry about lights being left on. Integration was seamless as well. Since Kasa and Tapo are both part of the TP-Link ecosystem, they work well together and can be managed easily through the apps and voice assistants. Overall, this has been a simple but very practical upgrade that just works exactly as intended.

Makes life easy, but has a few issues
Update, Oct 2024: The motion sensor is still very sensitive but it turned out the problem with the timer was my error. I'd set up a rule to turn the light off after 10 minutes but elsewhere in the app I'd set it to turn off if it didn't detect motion for 1 minute. So after 1 minute of me being out of sight of the motion detector it turned itself off, as I'd instructed it to. So a good slap of my own forehead here, a very loud "D'oh!" in my best Homer Simpson voice, and I'm restoring the fifth star to the product. Update, Aug 2024: The motion sensor is very sensitive. I've got mine set to the lowest setting and it activates when I'm 10 feet away in an adjacent room. It would be nice to be able to set it to be much less sensitive, so it activates if I walk past it but not if I walk somewhere in the general vicinity. It's as if the angle of view is fairly narrow, so that if I'm walking along the wall where it's located it doesn't respond until I walk right in front of it, but if I'm in the next room it will activate with me a clear 10 feet or more away. That's tedious, because it means if I stand at my bench to mend something the pantry light keeps turning on. There's also an issue that might be with the switch and might be with the Kasa app (I suspect the app, but the two go together). Because I'm prone to forget to turn off the pantry light (and sometimes it's hard to turn it off if I've got both hands full) I set up a rule in the software that activates when the light is turned on, and turns it off 10 minutes later. 10 minutes is plenty of time to find what I need in the pantry and leave, except that it actually turns off after more like 2-3 minutes. These aren't major issues but are irritating enough to knock off a star. There's not much point having time-based options if what happens bears so little resemblance to what I programmed, and it's been known for years that motion sensors that activate whenever anything happens remotely near them are of limited use. I still plan to install the other one in the attic, I'll just leave it to a standard rule to turn it off. Original review: I fitted a motion sensor switch to the room in my basement where I keep the chest freezer. When I take stuff down to the chest freezer I need to figure how to turn the light on, which can be tricky when I've got both hands full with stuff to go in the chest freezer. I can flick a switch with an elbow but it's a bit of a drag. And sometimes when I leave the room I forget to turn the light off, and find it still turned on a couple of days later when I'm next down there. A switch like this solves all these problems at once. The motion sensor means all I have to do is walk past it and the lights come on. And being a smart switch it means I can set up a rule that turns the light off again after 15 minutes. As a fallback I have a "scene" set up in the Kasa app that turns all the automated lights off at midnight regardless, so if the rule doesn't work as expected it will still shut off at midnight. Be aware these switches are quite deep. I had to replace the back box to fit it, because the previous switch I had was the smallest switch available. The metal back box that was in place was deep enough to hold the Kasa switch but didn't have enough free space to handle the cables in and out and the wire nuts behind the switch. But now I have a deeper back box and a switch that works very nicely. Installing the switch is about as easy as it gets. It has four wire tails - a white one to connect to neutral, a green one to connect to earth, and two black ones to connect to line/load. All you have to do is figure which wire is which, use the supplied wire nuts to join the wires together, and configure the switch. If you can't figure out electrics as simple as this, pay an electrician to do it for you. The default level of sensitivity had the light triggering if I went anywhere near it, so I turned it to the lowest sensitivity (this is done in the Kasa app) and now I have to walk right up to it before it activates. That's perfect for my needs, I don't want it turning on unless I actually go into the room where it is installed. As a smart switch it can be configured to activate only when ambient light is low, it has different levels of sensitivity for the motion sensor, and it can be controlled remotely and programmed to turn on and off at particular times. That sort of thing has obvious uses if you're going to be away for a few days, you can set up timers so it's not so obvious you're not home. You can also do all sorts of weird and wonderful things if you're so inclined, so if it takes your fancy you can set it up so that if you walk into the room where the switch is installed it will some totally unrelated device on or off. Why you'd want to turn the attic power strip off when you walk into a room in the basement is another matter, but you can if you want to. I have two of these, and I'm thinking a motion switch to turn the attic light on might be a handy thing to have, for similar reasons.

Simple setup
This was easy to put in and works very simply I think it's a great system and getting it sink to the app and all that was super easy and now we can use it in almost any way we want I would highly recommend this for someone who's looking for a motion light with some smart features

Happy with my choice, but not entirely so
Installed quickly and easily, and comes with its own screwless trim plate. Once the power was turned on, pairing with the Kasa app was seamless and took only a minute or two (the LED on the switch is fairly dim, and I had to cup my hand around it to see that it was flashing orange waiting to be paired with the app). The on-off functions in the app worked perfectly. Pairing with my Alexa app was also pretty simple, but you have to look by alphabetical order for "TP Link-Kasa" in the long list of devices that work with Alexa instead of "Kasa" only. The reason I am knocking off one full star in my rating has to do with the motion sensor. In the device settings menu (the gear icon top right in the device page of the app) you can choose between FAR RANGE, MID RANGE and the default CLOSE RANGE. On the CLOSE RANGE setting you really do need to be within 3-4 feet of the sensor. MID RANGE is out to about 8-10 feet and FAR RANGE is not consistent, sometimes it only senses out to about 12 feet. My kitchen is 20-feet x 20-feet and the switch is necessarily on the far wall opposit the entry door. I have to walk almost halfway across the kitchen to trigger the light to come on. The Lutron Maestro switch that started to fail a week ago, which this Kasa switch is replacing, could easily reach beyond the kitchen door. Nowhere in the product description does it discuss the motion sensor range limits. So minus one star. But the fact this is a smart switch is also the reasons I bought it. I can tell my Alexa Echo Pop to turn on the kitchen light before I get there. The Kasa app has a wide array of settings for turning on the switch under different scenarios, such as when ambient light goes below a certain level, or to automatically turn on and off at specific times, as well as how long to keep the light on after it no longer detects any motion. You can also program the switch to delay the off function a number of seconds after pressing the switch, so you don't have to walk across a dark room immediately after toruning off the lights. As a smart switch, you can program Alexa "routines" to turn the light off after a certain amount of time or tell it to turn off the light as I am leaving. But the two apps sort of compete against each other. Before I programmed a longer off time in the Kasa app, the default is one minute. When I told Alexa to turn the light off after 10 minutes, the light still went off after just one minute of no motion. When Alexa later turned the light off, the Kasa motion sensor did not turn the switch on until I turned it on manually. I'm not certain this is an anomaly or was just coincidence. The value of the Alexa app is the ability to group switches and plugs from different manufacturers (I have some Gosund plugs and switches also). You can "group" switches and plugs to control them all at the same times.

Works great for triggering garage lights upon opening garage door!
I am having my garage renovated (paint on walls, polyurea flooring, recessed lights instead of garage door light only). I wanted something that would trigger the four hardwired recessed lights I had installed when the garage door opened as I am getting read of the chain driven garage door opener and switching over to one that directly turns the torsion rod so I can have a cleaner look on the ceiling where the old garage door opener used to be. I was advised by my electrician to look for an occupancy switch or a wifi switch and this particular one does both! For about $13 this wires into the actual power line that turns the 4 recessed lights on/off and allows me to set the motion sensitivity, time of day it looks for motion, it even offers different environmental settings to give it an idea where it's located on your property. I'm seriously impressed at the suite of features at this price point. I was able to get it to easily connect to my 2.4ghz wifi signal I use for my smarthome devices only (i leave 5ghz+ for personal tech devices) and get my preferred settings all squared away. The default motion sensitivity setting was not strong enough to detect the door opening but I bumped that up to high and now it works flawlessly when the garage door opens. It also allows you to adjust the amount of time you want the light to stay on after it stops detecting motion which was a plus. There seems to be even more settings on there as well if I needed them. Interestingly I found this switch while looking at Homelink's site (I wanted something to be compatible with the Homelink buttons on my car's rearview mirror but it turns out the motion sensitivity works just fine so I won't even attempt to link it to my car). If you're looking for something similar in a garage project this really fit the bill and for a fantastic pricepoint - great job Kasa!

Pretty good
Installed this a few days ago, so far so good. No issues with the installation, replaced a ‘regular’ kasa smart light switch. This works as expected, though a couple of things that i wish were better: The angle of motion sensing is not as wide as i had hoped - i was thinking it would be closer to 180, but it’s quite a bit narrower. When i’m to the side of the switch or even a bit closer to the middle, it doesn’t see me. Because of that, i’ve had to set it to turn off after a longer amount of time so it doesn’t turn off while i’m in the room but out of its angle (and hope that i’ll move into range before that time is up - it’s my kitchen, so chances are good). Second slight disappointment is that the actual manual switch/button to turn it on or off feels a little kludgy - only the very bottom of the switch toggles, even though the entire lower portion of the switch is a single piece. The very middle of the switch does not depress at all. It’s not very intuitive, and the click action is a bit ‘mushy’ and inconsistent, not a solid satisfying click like the regular kasa rocker or a regular non-smart switch. All in all though, it does what i need it to do well enough so far - saves me a bit of electricity when i forget to turn it off, turns on automatically when i’m walking towards it. Has relatively good flexibility options such as making it manual only, or setting it to motion sense only during certain times. Fit and finish is on par with the kasa switches i have (which is to say pretty good). One thing to note was that it had a harder time connecting to my network than all the other kasa switches i’ve setup - had to restart the switch a couple times to finally connect to it and then be able to join my network, hopefully just a fluke.

Can't connect to wifi
I spent 2 hours trying to get this thing to work and I've installed hundreds of smart switches many of them Kasa. First the wires on the back are bulky. They should be screws but they are weird coming out the back. As a result you have a lot of issues squeezing all the wires back into the small electrical box. Forcing them in causes the neutral to keep coming out of the wire nut because builders always jam 8 wires into a nut made for 4. So I spent 30 minutes doing a 10 minute job. Next the wifi is garbage. I setup a special 2g wifi especially for all my "smart" devices that get confused by any Wi-Fi that has 5g even associated with it (wifi 6 and 7). That's not the issue here, Kasa must have cut all kinds of corners on making this useless wifi. I spent an hour trying to get it to connect but it just fails. The page you get dumped out to has a support link on it. No you can't click it, you need to open a browser and type it in, rude. Then I get to the page and find no support, instead they're trying to sell me the same piece of crap I need help with! In conclusion, there is no customer support. And what could they do I haven't tried? I would return it but after wasting more than 2 hours, I realized, why the heck do I need wifi for a stupid motion detector? It just needs to come on when I'm in the room and go of when I leave. If it can't do that, I'll rip it out and buy another brand. I used to love Kasa but no more. I'm done.

Motion sensor is a great feature
Very easy to install and wire up, instructions are included in the box and the app. Love the motion sensor function. Installed inside a pantry and a closet that our kids are always forgetting to turn off the lights in. The outer cover was a bit big for one of the switches next to a door, so we ended up using the old cover. Other than that, everything works great and can connect to the kasa home app
