Q: I know these are technically designed for m.2 but could these be placed on a gpu backplate for some passive cooling?

Can be placed anywhere else, but the size might not be appropriate, the cooling effectiveness may not reach the better effect, thanks for support JEYI.

Q: Why are there no instructions to show you how/where to install which of the three thermal pads?

Hi You didn't say what SSD you are mounting, so if you look at the item page you will see in the third picture down the standard application. One pad above and one below. We use Samsung Evo plus 970's. Samsung Pro 970's and Samsung 980's with this configuration and everything seems to work fine. I believe that the individual squares are for controllers with isolated chips where you want to be sure there is contact. As long as the chipsets are all the same height, the larger pads work well. Be sure to squeeze the heatsink into the base to make sure there is good contact all along the SSD. Hope this helps.

Q: Can i know the thickness of thermal pad? after i buy it, i want to replace the thermal pad to 'gelid solutions gp-extreme.'

There are actually two different thicknesses to allow for the difference in height between the control chip and the others. It's not possible for me to measure them now but from memory I would say they are approximately 1mm and 0.5mm. The sink works very well - my drive under normal use is 30C and does not rise much even during heavy use.
