Q: How about wedding photos?

Should be OK. With a full-frame camera you would get a 50mm field of view, with a 1.6x reduction (like most DSLRs) it would be equivalent to a 80mm lens, which might be a bit long- so you'd have to stand a bit further back from the 'bride, groom and full family' type photo. The quality would be very good (much better than a kit-lens zoom, for example). Watch out for flare if the sun can shine directly into the lens. The standard lens-hood is some help here, but putting the camera on a tripod and using a piece of dark card to shade the lens is probably even better!

Q: IS this lens good for close up / portrait pictures. Not looking for a macro lens just something with closer images. I have a 650D

I found this lens excellent for portrait pictures even though I am shooting on a Canon 1100 (cropped chip). There is a beautiful shallow depth of field and for the price you just can't beat it.

Q: Is this what a novice would call a 'wide angle ' lens

*** NO *** A 50 MM LENS IS NOT WHAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER A WIDE ANGLE LENS. This lens is excellent for portrait shots, particularly indoors. It is a fast lens for the price, meaning that it lets sufficient light in in a short length of time ideal for lower light/moving targets. At a party this lens takes great shots with sharp foreground and blurred backgrounds.HOWEVER, in a small room 50mm will appear quite close to the subject, therefore I do not think this is a suitable wide angle lens. You would require something below 35mm. The Canon EF M 22mm f/2 STM is much better lens if a wide angle is required (such as for wide panoramic landscape shots). If a fast portrait lens is required, the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II is amazing value for money.Hope this helps.

Q: What are the limitations of this lens? I can afford more expensive lenses I just don't want to have to upgrade in the future when I could buy now.

I think it depends on what you will be using it for. I have only had it a short while and bought it for its wide aperture compared with my zoom (3.5-5.6). Optically this looks good although I don't print larger than a4. The main restriction is the slightly slow focus as it's the old motor driven mechanism. For static shots it's not a problem but for street photography it's possible to miss a shot because the focus is not instant like the USM or stm lenses. I think it's brilliant value for money for what you get, it just depends on your intended use.
