Q: how does it assemble?

The main peg board has screw holes in each corner and butts up against each other, so that you can have it as landscape (as in the picture) or portrait. The tool tray has a couple of screw holes underneath. The pegs provided are quite flimsy and can pop out if any real weight is applied. If you can afford it spend a few more quid on another board! In hind sight I wish I had. Hope this helps ;-)

Q: Is the spacing between holes standard, so that other suppliers' pegs can be used? Which alternative brands have been used successfully?

The center to center distance of this board (332) is 4 cm horizontal and 2,5 cm vertical. I can not tell you if there are other pegs for this board. I am sorry. Q: what type of plastic is it made from?

The wall plate is quite robust moulded plastic, and the tool rack is the same, but I have no idea what type of plastic it is. All I can say, is mine gets used every day, and it has a lot of tools on it, and it's standing up to the test of time. The hooks that go into the peg board however are not the best, and I had to order some spare ones. Hope this helps.

Q: Could the main peg board be hung vertically or horizontally?

HI, the peg board is actually in two square parts. If you want the board to be vertical rather than horizontal as shown in the pictures you just screw them to the wall one above the other. BTW, the boards do have to be screwed to the wall firmly and not hung as a picture might be.
