An Hydrometer will give you a gravity reading (which is based on sugars in the liquid), however this number may mean nothing to you unless you are going to ferment and then take another reading (an alcohol content is worked out by the difference between the 2 readings) It may be that the tool you would want is a refractometer Regards Brad

Hi RMTo get the alcohol content you would need to take 2 readings. The first reading should be taken when all fruit and and sugars have been added and your wine topped up to required level as per your recipe (this first reading is usually around 1080 - 1090) but it is important that the reading is taken prior to the addition of yeast, your 2nd reading should be taken after fermentation is complete (generally 992 - 995 or thereabouts) Using the 2 reading you can calculate the alcohol content of your wine, you can do this using a formula which is printed on the paper slip included or you can use an online home brew alcohol calculator (like the one on Balliihoo Homebrew Homepage) Simply enter the 1st reading (called Og - Original gravity) and 2nd reading (Fg final gravity) and this will give you the alcohol content.Regards Brad

It's about 1.5cm diameter at its widest point. Certainly less than 2cm!
