Q: Can you use any brand of batteries

I would have thought so, provided they are the rechargeable type. I use the ni-cad 2800 type from EBL - they are excellent, as is the battery charger !

yes this will charge 8 AA Batteries at the same time....Or 8 AAA battries

Q: What happens if i charge 2 aa battery and one is full and other one is charging, how will i know if i still need to keep it charging?

This is the weakness of this charger. Ideally every bay would have individual charging circuitry. When unequally discharged cells are put in as one pair, the charging current through them is the same so one will finish undercharged and the other possibly permanently damaged. Even if you only ever USE cells in pairs, over time, their individual characteristics cause an imbalance of charge levels. Pay more for a better charger with individual charging and hence protect your investment in rechargeable cells.

Q: I've used this charger happily for over a year, charging only aas. just bought rechargeable aaas but the connection bit seems way too loose?

I find that mine are a tight fit. Place the flat end of the battery against the larger flat plat of the charger then push the nobbly end down onto the smaller nearer metal bump on the other side. The higher bump is for the AA batteries. Mine is a tight fit. If yours isn't it must be faulty.
