Digital Textile Design, Second edition Paperback – Illustrated, 1 Oct. 2012

This is a useful reference book for textile design students or anyone interested in pursuing textile design using digital methods. There are interesting and informative chapters on textile and fashion designers who have developed digital methods and explanations about printing methods. I would say it is aimed squarely at printed textiles as it concentrates on Photoshop and Illustrator software, and doesn' t cover any of the specialist software for constructed (knitted or woven) textile design. However, the elements of repeat and design layering/assembly could be helpful for knitted textile design development, possibly less for woven textiles although the tutorial on stripe and tartan design might be applicable.The book features tutorials for Photoshop and Illustrator, but these do assume a considerable familiarity with the programmes and are not in very great detail. That is not to say they aren't useful, but do require existing knowledge and understanding. All the design tutorials are for surface pattern, and do not include textural surfaces or construction of the underlying fabric.I have given this a high star rating because it is really good to see a book that discusses a design discipline and informs the reader about its current state and methods but also includes 'how to' tutorials to enable them to develop their own design skills. If you want to go further you will need to collect your own souce material, develop your design aesthetic and of course spend a lot of time practising on the software, but this is a good starting point.

I am a Surface design student and I struggle with digital textile designing. This book is the best book on this subject. Includes step by step tutorials which are very easy to follow. Gives a brief description of the current textile designers and the techniques they use to make prints. So much better stuff than what I have learned during the two years of my course in uni. Everything I wanted to learn is inside this book. So happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to a friend. Go buy it seriously.

Colourful book with lots of examples of work by textile designers

Fab book, really clear and inspirational. Would give it 5 if I had photoshop or illustrator so I'm having to 'translate' accordingly. I'm hoping all the instructions are generic enough to allow me to do this.

An interesting and informative book on producing digital textile designs. It is good on technique and method combining old hand produced methods with modern digital techniques. Some of the designer/student work is inspiring. A good book for both students, teachers and professionals.

am a fashion student wanting to learn more about textiles as i only focus on design- this book informed me of all the different avenues in textile exploration as well as gave basic know how in how to use adobe programs to create digital prints- found this book incredibly useful and i would recomend it to anyone interested.

Nothing wrong with this book but it wasn't what I needed/thought it was hence the 3 stars. If you are looking for a book that is more fashion and printing method related then this is the one for you - it has helpful guides for beginners too.

What a great book. I knew very little about digital printing, and as an artist, I wish to learn more about this new medium. Easy to read and full of great images. I would highly recommend this to any artist.
