I didn't bother reading the instructions, since they're just a toy, so I'm not sure whether this is supposed to happen. The good bits are when they're set to the same channel, they work brilliantly and the re-chargeable facility means that they are used a lot by my children, albeit with my assistance to set them to the right channels. They haven't actually run out of battery despite a few hours of being off the charger, so I would say that they keep enough charge for the time they're required by my 2 daughters. I think the kids would need to be 4+ as they need to understand that they have to hold the button down whilst they talk... She loves them! The quality is very good, they are robust and well made. A real bonus is that they are rechargeable and come with a convenient charger cradle that hold both hand sets. The radio range is truly phenomenal, something like 3.5km in the right conditions! You may have to change channels a few times to avoid picking up local mini-cabs but there are 10 channels so not a problem.
