This Single Sided 8 by 3 Inch Strop is exclusively made by Shark Designs in the UK. It is made to the highest standard from a solid Beech wood platen that has one side sheathed in high quality, specially treated, Vegetable Tanned leather. This 8 by 3 Inch Strop was initially commissioned by the world renowned sharpening expert, James Barry, from James Barry Sharpening Solutions. What James required, was a strop that had a much wider working surface than the ones he was using. It had to be more stable so that professional Woodworkers could strop larger cutting tool blades (i.e. plane blades, chisels and other woodworking tools) to a higher standard. We produced the original strop for James Barry Sharpening Solutions that fitted his requirements. This large 8 inch by 3 inch (203mm by 76mm) strop has a working surface of 24 sq. inches and can be mounted in a vice via the wooden platen for absolute stability whilst stropping. Any strop that is used, au naturel, so to speak (i.e. without a honing compound) is simply a ‘Strop.’ Simple strops have no significant abrasive qualities. They do not, therefore, remove metal from a tools cutting edge … they simply polish the tool’s cutting edge, thus adding that little extra ‘je ne sais quoi’ that all professionals require from their cutting tools. When, however, a strop is charged with an abrasive compound, the strop ceases to be a ‘Simple Strop’ and becomes a ‘Honing Strop.’ Honing Strops enable speedy and efficient removal of those troublesome micro-chips and burrs from a cutting edge within just a few seconds of stropping. Regularly stropping your tools can keep them in tip top, razor-sharp, condition for extended periods of time, before the need to re-sharpen them again on a sharpening stone.
