Despite the recent reviews mentioning a petrol-like smell, I decided to purchase one of these for my 3 rats as a means to help keep their claws filed, as I know in the past they've been highly recommended. When mine came, it definitely did have some kind of chemical smell to it-- but it wasn't strong enough to be a concern in my opinion. That said, my parcel was left outside in the shed for a day so that may have allowed it to 'air out' a bit.Prior to the lava ledge, my rats didn't take much interest in chewing anything in the cage. They didn't seem to care for any of the wood chews I bought them. But, within less than a day from attaching this to the cage, they had nibbled all around the edge of it! It's still perfectly intact and sturdy, can handle the weight of 3 young adult rats with no problems, and it seems to be a big hit with them. I see them sitting on the ledge very often, chewing away at the pumice or using it to get into their sleeping pod. It hasn't made a huge difference to their claws in my own experience, but I imagine with constant use it it will certainly be better than nothing.Overall, I would definitely recommend the lava ledge and I will be buying another one in the future. If yours comes with a strong smell, leaving it outside (even in the packaging) for a day should help!

My Degus, my rats and my chinchilla all have one in their cage! They love them!

I bought this for my rats and they loved sitting on it. It was their perch for when they wanted treats! They didn't really chew on it but anything to help sand down those little claws is saving me from little scratches!! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that no matter how much I tighten the fastening to their cage, it doesn't feel as tight as I think it should. It started to go wonky after a while and my little buggers used it as a spring board to get up the cage faster!!

It's just a slab of pumice rock. Big, with big metal stabiliser circles. Smells weird but after a few mins it's better.I 100% recommend this. Since this is likely a cheap product to manufacture, they aren't going "cheap" with the design. You get what you expect. In fact, this exceeded my expectations.Thick, suitable for most small rodents, and if your pet is too big for it, just put two slabs together for a huge shelf.If my rats like gnawing on it, I will become a frequent customer. In fact, I will probably buy more later anyway just because it's hard finding suck sturdy cage wall shelves anywhere!10/10

got a few for my two rats and they work really well and are really secure, wish you could choose the colour but it doesn’t really matter too much as long as it does its job and makes my rats happy

Rats love climbing on it, chewing it and it helps with their nails. Definitely recommend for any rat owner‼️‼️
