Q: Ok, maybe I'm missing something... Can't I just use a large food storage container and heat in the microwave? Is there something special about this?

Nope, not this effectively because it has much thicker walls than storage containers so it retains heat wonderfully, especially if you actually warm it up IN the warmer. I use this in my restaurant, torts can sit on the assembly line for over an hour and still be warm in this and we tried other containers first and they were cold in minutes.

Q: Will this warmer also keep the Tortillia fresh enough to store them in it?

I keep mine in their package in the warmer.

For microwave and storage use only. (Microwave Save!) It is BPA and melamine-free. Top rack dishwater safe. Perfect for warming or reheating more than a dozen burrito-sized tortillas as well as pancakes and buns. Place warmer in micro to ensure everyone at the table receives hot, fresh food at the same time. I will tell you that I have used it to serve potatoes chips, etc., warm pancakes, etc., and I'm so glad that I purchased this tortilla warmer. Is a great asset to my kitchen/table.

I would say it is a plastic... it is very sturdy and does a great job in our microwave. If you have ever been served tortillas in a container in a Mexican restaurant it is like that container... as Dianne indicates... use in the microwave only

Well worth the money. Also BE SMART, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

Absolutely worth the money. A pack of tortillas, or wraps as they are called in UK placed in this container and microwaved for 30 seconds! Wow, they are hot and steamy but don't stick together like they would if heated in oven. This is a marvelous device. REMEMBER This not for wet foods, but breads, tortillas, waffles and all to keep things warm. Greatest buy yet.
