Q: Would these help prevent water erosion?

I don’t think so. Unless you were to remove any grass or weeds and then put some thing like pine bark mulch over it I don’t think it would be very beneficial. They are rather thin and they are cut from the inside circle out. I did not find them very useful except for inside plants

Why do the pictures look like these are 1/2" thick. Customers review pictures you can see through the mats? They look about 1/8" Vendor doesn't list the thickness for a reason. How can I possible order these? They aren't cheap.

Q: Are these easy to shred?

I haven’t tried but seem like it wouldn’t be easy. You should look at coconut husk instead of trying to shred these mats.
