Great Disc Player/Writer - Don't Settle for Cheap!
I've been using this for about a year and a half now - I've traveled with it and used it at home and it has never given me a problem reading or writing discs. I had a cheap $20 drive that worked when it wanted to so out of necessity I decided to buy something of quality and this certainly is quality. It seems built to last, unlike a lot of electronics these days. It's easy to use and again, unlike the cheap options, it works ALL the time. I mainly use it to back up my media collection (movies, games, music) so I can take that stuff on the road without carrying it all around when I travel. I use it A LOT. The one thing I have not tested is the BD writer so I cannot comment on that. If you're looking for an external disc drive you can count on to work, don't think, just buy it.

Works great!
Reads my blue rays. I’m in the USA so far all of my blue rays work. Comes with free download of a movie player which is super helpful. Would recommend.

Nicely Designed BD/DVD Drive with very Minor Issues
Great brand with strong reputation made me choose this drive. The USB Drive is super convenient and works out of the box, no special drivers. Warning, you will need BD/DVD player software to play movies as Windows does not come with the codecs necessary. Sadly, this is true for any player you purchase. For the most part, the player is extremely quiet and all features work perfectly. You can download a special (but rough) utility from the manufacturer to tweak the player. For example, you can make it read faster or quieter or prioritize the quality of writing/reading. One small gripe, imperfections in some of my Blu Ray movies caused some minor skipping. Needed to adjust the drive to prioritize quality, which made it louder as the disc spinned. To be fair, it was now making just as much noise as my other drives that didn't have a quiet feature. When I played the same movie on a regular Blu Ray player hooked up to my TV, it did not have the same skipping issues.

Perfect Pioneer Allowed Me To Extract Favorite BD's That 4K is Leaving Behind
I needed an excellent, reputable external BD/UHD disc reader/player due to the fact my new computer had no internal optical drives - none at all, actually - which does not bother me a bit. I prefer an external/portable reader, hands down. The reason it is important is because I use MakeMKV to extract "must have" BD movies from my library (a tiny portion of my 4k collection), preserve the Stereo or DD 5.1 sound, and use them during travel or to just get a really, really good rendering of the old movie that some current home theater systems don't render as well as I would like. Trust me, I've got the goods when it comes to home theater. But, good ol' VLC and a very good computer are the Steady Freddies for simple, excellent movie watching on the go or on the cheap! Here are some of the 2K movies I have extracted and watched - and they are flawless... in most cases with better motion smoothing (and no glowing) than a 4K player can render with the same 2K disk. Such titles are: Tron:Legacy; The Last Samurai; I, Robot; Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow; The Book Thief. Finally, I must say the build and the operation of this small and mighty external BD player is fantastic. I almost felt like I was handline equipment from a lab... or being part of a burn-in test on a new, revolutionary product. Thanks, Pioneer!

Oops.
Works great. I didn't realize when I purchased my new PC that it didn't have a slot to install a drive. My bad.

WILL NOT PLAY BLUERAY MOVIES
GOOD LUCK GETTING THIS TO PLAY BLUERAY MOVIES. I will be sending this trash back, it WILL NOT play ANY blueray movies. After doing a ton of research it has to do with digital piracy measures but the short answer is if you plan to use this to watch blueray movies on your pc ITS NOT GOING TO WORK and thats the sole reason i bought this over a regular dvd player at less than a third of the cost of this player.
