I bought this item to help with some home improvements. And wow, what a brilliant bit of kit this is. I can see me using this a lot with all the jobs I’ve got lined up. Starting with what is in the box, Topdon provide a 16Gb card with the camera. A nice little extra, as often you buy something and on delivery it’s not included. Then you have to purchase a memory card and have to wait to have it delivered before you can use your item. Other contents in the box includes a Charger, usb cable, carry case and instruction manual. It comes with a torch built in too, so you can even use this when it’s dark, which is another bonus. When you first unpack the camera and switch it on, you have to allow it to calibrate itself, then you have to set up a couple of things such as the language, date and time. Insert the memory card and you are away. Once again well done to Topdon for making everything so easy and straight forward. Also the battery is already fully charged and ready to go. No need to wait 2 hours whilst it charges for the first time. Whilst testing the thermal imaging camera in my house. I noticed a cold spot around the front door that I hadn't seen before, and wouldn’t have know about it. Further inspection identified a problem with the sealing that was causing a cold spot. It's fixed now, so draught eliminated. Video and images can be saved to the supplied 16Gb SD card and these can be analysed with the free software provided by Topdon (via download). Software is reasonably easy to figure out and even shows a distribution of the temperatures measured across the whole picture. Overall very pleased with the camera so far. Can see loads of uses that simply weren't possible before. From checking the performance of my radiators,doors,windows and even walls, the list is endless. and see how efficiently my house is holding heat, or not as the case may be. It’s so user friendly and I would definitely recommend it.

Good build quality as most topdon bits are. Good screen size, ideal for automotive industry use. Also great for finding cold area's in your home.

I have always wanted to get a thermal imaging camera as there are many uses for products like these, especially for a DIY enthusiast like myself. However, thermal imaging cameras have always been way beyond my price range. I’m glad that prices have dropped and are now more affordable. The versatility of the camera means that it can be used for many applications whether you’re a homeowner, car enthusiast, DIYer or electrician to name a few. I bought the Topdon TC004 Lite recently and have been very impressed by it so far. It is a great tool to use to find problem areas in the home such as determining where there is heat loss. I have also used it in my camper van to find where the heat is leaking so that the insulation can be rectified. The device can also used to indicate excessive heat in electrical parts which could lead to a fault. The device itself is well-made and is similar to professional handheld imaging devices that I’ve used at my workplace. You can toggle between different colour chart bars and the display also has a centre crosshair temperature reading and a dynamic hotspot reading. You can save images via the internal storage (500 MB) and they can be played on the device as well as connected via the charging port to your computer for downloading. The images are 240x320. The resolution of the thermal sensor is 240X180. The device comes with a handy pouch to protect the thermal imager for transport. Pressing the centre button accesses the menu which allows you to change settings. This is the lite version of the TC004 which means that there are features that are not included such as video capture, PC connectivity, and LED light. While these features can enhance the device, I particularly don’t require these features as the main function of a thermal imaging camera is sufficient. There are also other added features such as a tripod screw mount for stationary placement although I have not used this feature as it works quite nicely handheld.

Why did you choose this product over others?: Probably not the most accurate device on the market, but cheap, and useful enough for the tasks I've put it to: -Finding UFH heating pipes (and not drilling holes in them) -Identifying active electronic devices -Finding the source of heat gains around the house during hot weather -Verifying and identifying various aircon pipes in the car -Pretending I'm the Predator There's a few caveats and limitations to using any of these devices, the relative shininess of the object you are viewing will affect the readings significantly, as can the distance from the subject, the spot-readings can vary from reality quite substantially too, however its strength is in identifying the relative temperature differences in the field of view, rather than accurately stating what that temperature actually is. It has several different colour palettes, which are user selectable, but it would be nice if the colour gradient on the screen could be fixed to a scale, rather than spanning the range of what is viewed. Battery seems to last a good amount of time (not had to recharge it yet) and the carry case is a nice touch as it'll protect it when it goes back into the tool-box.
