Solid text for more advanced students
There are some really good books out there for introducing oneself to multilevel analyses. I was lucky enough to have one of those assigned to me early in my program. That's not Hox, Moerbeek, & Van de Schoot's book, however. Their text gives a well-organized and reasonably well-articulated overview of many of the major issues one would want to keep in mind moving from standard regression analyses to multilevel analyses. However, it is not a text that I would call pedagogically aware. They explain as individuals who have already worked so long with the material that it is not clear to them what students will need to hear. That means a great deal of extra legwork for the student that wouldn't be necessary with some alternative texts. To be clear, I like this book well enough. It includes much good information, but the execution brings down the value of the content. I often lead statistics study groups, and I would definitely draw some material from this, but I wouldn't choose it as a central source.

Great! But not for beginners.
I have already completed a doctorate degree and this book is extremely helpful for experienced statisticians. Offers great ADDED insight into a already working base-knowledge of multivariate analysis. I am thoroughly enjoying the read and it is helpful for me, but would be extremely hard for a beginner to follow.

terrible text book
If you are required like me to purchase this book for a class, don't buy this book. I am currently in an introductory class to multilevel modeling, and we are using mostly HLM to work through a class project an, this book is no help. It provides the information in a confusing way, and it does not guide you through the process of conducting multilevel models. it's badly done, not good for beginners!!

Well-written and useful , but the Kindle edition suffers from a having all of its equations in very, very small font. For a mathematics book with a lot of subscripts in its formulas, it makes for an uncomfortable reading experience. Otherwise, thanks to the author for a great book!
