Is the hanging hook metal, or some other material

Its plastic. I hang it off the back of the door in the hotel bathroom. I dont see a problem with it ever breaking, because of the materials.

Is this item approved by Airlines travel?

It's a toiletry bag & easily fits inside my carry-on bag. I've traveled on several different airlines & none have ever questioned a toiletry bag including this one.What they will remove are liquids that are over the size limitation for carry-on.

It's expandable.. goes from the small size to the larger size when you unzip the panel/pocket.
