Review: Outstanding book full of takeaways! - Absolutely love this book! So aligned with my own passion as an educator. Jen breaks down the psychology of behaviour and emotions so easily and in such an engaging manner! The amount of takeaways that you can put it into practice immediately is without my favourite thing about this book. Fabulous, well done Jen! Review: I wish I had this book my first year of teaching (18 years ago). I highly recommend it to anyone looking for help or support with behavior in the classroom. This book is not new information to me. Much like Jen Foster, the author, I started teaching without a lot of training regarding behavior. My first kindergarten students brought such violent and dangerous behaviors to our room, and I was not trained to handle any of it. I looked to the supposed experts around me, those who had more experience than I, my teammates, our administration, the special education department, the school psychologist. No one had any ideas what to do. Just like the author, I quickly realized I had to become the expert. I jumped to sign up for every training and read all the books I could find: Whole Brain Teaching, Dr. Becky Bailey and Conscious Discipline, Dan St. Romain, PBIS (which has been implemented so poorly in the school system, most educators deemed it ineffective without having access its most valuable research). With this book, Jen has done a wonderful job compiling the research for you. She sums up everything and makes it understandable and easily accessible for a quick read. She is honest when she says she can’t give you all the answers, but she gives you the map and the directions to get you on the proper path to success. I wish the images in the book were larger and in color. Some of them are difficult to read because they are light gray. The font/spacing of the lines is not the same as other books in print. I had to use a book mark to track the lines as I was reading. The book (just look at the title) is written in British English. I “learnt” a lot about the differences in our language. I found the variations in terminology endearing.

Aligns well with teachers who value building relationships and also setting boundaries for behavior.

A refreshing up to-date view on behaviour and supporting children in school. Written with warmth and kindness that knows that it’s like to lead a classroom and outs the children at the heart of it. It’s is an easy read and relatable- so easy to see it into practice in classrooms An essential read for classroom staff and easily digestible and bite size. Bought for our ECTs as they join school to set out our ethos and culture for behaviour

I loved, loved, LOVED this book. Working as an Educational Psychologist this book really encapsulates some of the research and theory I aim to share with the schools I work in and I’ll be recommending it to all my SENCos and Teachers. Why is it so good? It presents the information in an engaging and accessible way, incorporating a mixture of real life examples and practical strategies and resources that can be easily implemented in classrooms without the need of fancy resources or expensive training courses. Perhaps the biggest success of this book is in the way it encourages people to reconsider how they view children’s behaviour - how it shifts the reader from a fixed mindset (that behaviour is always wilful and controllable) to a mindset that is curious (rather than ‘furious’) and provides space for an emotionally attuned and relational response. Such an approach fosters true inclusivity. This book will make a difference to classrooms across the country.
