Excellent Siebel developer's guide
When searching for useful information or documentation about Siebel development, time again I end up back in Siebel Bookshelf. There have been a few attempts over the years by independent authors but nothing has come close to the completeness of Bookshelf or the hands on usefulness of the Oracle Core Consulting training course.Until now!The Siebel 8 Developer's handbook is an excellent combination of:1. Key concepts and tutorials, covering the basics of the Siebel development process2. Technical reference, covering some really useful tips and tricks such as standard Business Services and User PropertiesThe book covers the Siebel Tools basics, UI configuration, business layer configuration, workflow and some scripting - as well as other bits and pieces. Don't expect a complete eScript reference here - it's mentioned but not covered in massive detail. eScript is such a huge subject, this doesn't surprise me and it certainly doesn't take anything away from the book. Installation and administration is very, very briefly covered in an appendix - however, this is a developers guide and Alex has another book out there that covers this area in greater detail. It's useful as a beginners guide but with information and tips in there that may surprise seasoned Siebel developers. Whether it could replace the Core Consulting course - I'm not so sure. The book is certainly something where real beginners to Siebel could pick up and start to understand the development process - however, I still think the context and detail in the instructor led training is vital for good developers who really understand the technology and how to implement it well. Don't expect to get rid of your shortcut to Bookshelf either - you'll still need to refer back for greater detail in most areas.Overall, a great book that I would highly recommend to Siebel developers.
