NC Scout does it again
Another great book from NC Scout. IMO this is required reading for everyone involved with communication and its propagation. Reading it has improved my skill set.

Terrific book
Very useful book if you are interested in radios and signal intelligence. Clearly written, stays out of arcane technical detail, very focused on practical information.

Fantastic information from an authoritative source
This is a great book with just the right mix of big picture “why” information along with very detailed “how-to” information. Highly recommended and the author is providing genuine expertise. Don’t be fooled by some other copycat authors who repackage NC Scout’s books and sell as their own, get it right from the guy who knows. By the way, I paid full price here on Amazon and it’s worth every penny, but only if NC Scout gets the well-earned royalties.

Perfect framework for gaining signals situational awareness
This book lays out a thorough and accurate blueprint for thinking through, planning, and executing a one-time or ongoing operation of monitoring and reacting to local frequency usage. These techniques and procedures would work equally well for the hobbyist, a team responding to an emergency incident such as a natural disaster or search & rescue scenario, or someone more tactically oriented. As in his other books on radio, NC Scout takes a complex subject, covers it in a thorough, holistic way, and explains both the “how” and the “why” in a way that the Everyman can understand. He’s a great teacher and this book is no exception to his thoughtful contributions to the field of learning! Great work, and strongly advised!!

Great Book, but some has some outdated equipment references
So, first of all, if you have any interest in this topic, just buy the book. The author references mostly current tools and techniques without getting into the weeds. It is however largely a jumping off point. The author offers a three day course in Sigint techniques, so don't expect a relatively short book to get into all the details he likely addresses in his course. That said, it would be great if there was someday a volume two of this book that went into deeper detail on the topics. For example, he introduces the TinySA spectrum analyzer but it is up to the reader to go deeper into this topic as he only devotes a couple of pages to it. Same with his mention of wide band monitoring receivers. Again, he speaks to the utility and later in the book does give a very brief overview of workflow, but does not really go into depth as to how to set it up, what to monitor, etc. This is also the one major nit that I have to pick and the reason I did not give it five stars. He mentions two wide band receivers, an Alinco which has been off the market for a number of years and an AOR that costs $1,500 (though you can probably find it used on eBay for 1/3 that price). While I get that he is speaking to tools that he has personally used, it would have been nice to include a radio that was still in production in 2023 when this book was published. I picked up an Icom IC-R6 for about $150. I suspect it will do the job, but it would have been great if it or something current like it would have been mentioned.

Great Guide to SIGINT
From a former HUMINT 35m/f, this has been a great guide to the SIGINT community. NC Scout references modern 5th Gen warfare and the use of current tools and the ability to start your own collection team. I highly recommend this book and looking forward to reading other titles from Brushbeater!
