Q: Are dementions that of the overall dish or the space for the butter A standard block of Kerrygold is 4" x 2 1/2, Will it fit?

No, it will not fit without cutting it. The dimensions are slightly deceiving--the actual useable area for butter is just over 2.5" x 2.5". I included a photo of this item with butter in it (cut up) in my review from 8/17/15

I'd say around an inch in diameter, no larger. Easy to pick up.
