The Audio & Video is the best I have ever seen for language learning And I rate them 10/10 but this book is not laid out for easy self learning rather its a book where you need a teacher just to explain how to use the book. The theme of stories is definitely up for discussion as its not containing everyday words for the common folk. There is far too much vocabulary preceding the actual story. I can understand how this book is use din a University or similar institute but I would much rather use a book like Al Kitab Al Asassi or Arabiyaat al Naas which are simple to use and take you on a journey.

The Best of the Al-Kitaab Series
This is, by far, the best book in the Al-Kitaab series. Whilst it still suffers from some of the problems present in the other book (mostly lack of organisation or direction), it makes up for it with a wealth of interesting and stimulating texts which really help the reader get a grasp of the written Arabic language.Additionally, most of the texts are originals taken from journals or books. This means that the patronizing contrived texts from book 2 are no longer a feature. If anyone remembers what trying to learn al-Hal structure from texts in book 2 was like, they will understand what I mean. Most of the grammar present in books 1 & 2 is summarised, with any outstanding points covered as well. The grammar sections are mostly tables or lists with short explanations and exercises following. I find this to be the best way of learning grammar as opposed to the seemingly endless pages worth of explanations present in books 1 & 2.All in all it's not a perfect book. But find me the Arabic textbook which is. It's solid and helpful and also serves as a good reference for things one may have forgotten since studying the other books in the series.

Working through this book takes time. Each chapter has a lot of expressions and vocab. A teacher is absolutely required for both grammar and understanding the rather convoluted Arabic writing style. Studying Vol 3 requires knowledge of Vol 2 old edition (2005). The gap between Vol 3 and Vol 2 new edition (2009) is too wide. There is not THE ideal Arabic teaching book out there. But so far the Georgetown series is the most widespread and sets a standard in many ways.

This is how Arabic is being taught on US University Campuses
In the late 60's the 18-or-so Universities which taught Arabic used "The University of Michigan" Course in Standard Arabic, Newspaper Arabic, in second year Arabic, and, in the summer, would have a course in one of the Arabic dialects--I was lucky and had Mukhtar Ani and Khalil Hawi teaching me Damascene Arabic with his (Damascene Arabic, by Mukhtar Ani and the Georgetown crew of Professors) book and Rice and Said's book, Levantine Arabic, which is still in print on Amazon. By learning to speak, we started to become more fluent in reading. This new method, Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya, by Kristen Brustad and the crew at Georgetown, introduces the written Arabic in each lesson, --the DVD is well made and has the characters in the book speaking "classical," or, "written" Arabic--and then, also, later, at the end of each lesson, does some of the "colloquial" or "spoken" Arabic. Thus, the method bridges the gap between the "written" and "colloquial" Arabic. I haven't perused this particular "Book 3," but I'm sure it is just as good as "Book 1"

Great Series for learning Arabic
As a student learning Arabic, this series is the best way to go. The third book mostly just presents new vocabulary. It refines some grammar knowledge and provides insight on literary styles, but its main goal is to introduce lots of words and have the student use them. Because of this, the vocab lists in this book are massive, so it helped me to make flashcards to learn them all.

Problem with the DVD/CD/MP3
I have had to return the textbook once and was issued with a new copy but the same problem occurred. The CD and DVD are blank.

Great for learning Arabic grammar
This book is great at instructing grammar, but after 12 semesters of Arabic instruction, it seemed like the outside materials I used were more beneficial for vocabulary...
