The best movie Disney ever made?
With the fuss made about Mulan's skin and eye colour there was certainly a lot that could go wrong with Moana. Here you will find Polynesian legends hacked apart and dosed up with Western sentiment - is that ok? The music is a potentially grotesque hybrid of Disney-style and Pacific-influenced music - is that acceptable? The lead character (Moana - the clue is in the title) speaks with a distinctly American (ie non-Pacific) accent - surely that can't be right? And to top it all, the Pacific trickster demi-god Maoi is played by The Rock (Duane Johnson)....who also sings. That can't be right can it?Well, it could have all so easily gone horribly wrong, but actually it didn't.Disney defused the "a Pacific islander doesn't talk like an American" by casting an unknown actress from Hawaii (so, technically, a Pacific Islander) as the main character - and she (Auliʻi Cravalho) pulls it off believably and superbly. Duane Johnson revels in the role as the mischievous Maoi - a shape-shifter and ambiguously a devil and a god at the same time (per the trickster character of both South Pacific traditions and Norse legends - Loki). To top it all that Rock sings damnably well as well. The music is in my opinion the best out of all the Disney movies (yes just pipping Lion King to the post on that one) using themes and styles borrowed from Polynesian and Micronesian music traditions, but with enough Westernisation to have international audiences singing in the aisles. Finally the animation - really, as good as it gets. Genuine Pacific style iconography appears throughout the movie and the island scenes are particularly believable. If you have ever visited an island in the South Pacific you will recognise everything that is going on here and feel completely transported. In short, I think this the best movie Disney ever made.

Great film.
Good story line, and brilliant animation. This is another story were the main character, a girl, saves the day. Girl empowerment. The music is very evocative, and to me as I know nothing about the Samoan culture or music, was an eye opener. Kids will love it, and grown ups too.

It's loved by all mine, small and big
A great Disney movie, with awesome characters all round. There are so many favourites, even down to the chicken hey hey. The acting voices are fab. I love the bonus content at the end, it tells about how the movie was made, it's actually really interesting and there is an extra movie. I love the way Moana and Maui interact. Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho are such good actors! The soundtrack is lovely too and you will be singing them soon enough. The story tells of a young girl determined to prove herself and make everything right to save her family and people. Full of funny moments and sad moments too. I love Moana's grandma, many can relate to being the crazy lady ;)

Another great Disney Film
It's a bit annoying that the bonus content is just part of the same video after the film, rather than having multiple video files - but other than that, this is a great film, and I've watched it twice in two months...

Wonderful movie and great additional content.
Moana is a masterwork of animation, composition and storytelling. Good for children and adult of all ages, I find myself singing the soundtrack for days after watching. The additional content is good fun and a great window into the making of the movie as well as additional songs that were cut :)The only thing I would have liked would have been to be able to browse the additional content to select a specific one instead of it being one long movie.

Yay - no prince to the rescue!!
Great story, with a strong female lead who does not have a romance with a male character or be rescued. Moana is allowed to be an independent girl, who is able to rescue her people through her own courage, perseverance and intelligence.I also loved the character of the wise grandmother - there may well be some cultural stereotyping but at least it presents an older woman as someone with wisdom and integrity, who supports her granddaughter; leaving no need for any 'strong men' to assist Moana. And who could not love the learning disabled chicken, Hey-Hey, or Pua the cute pig. Loved the setting, amongst Polynesian islanders too.Yes, there is still some Americanisation and stereotyping but things have moved on a lot from the days of Peter Pan and the comically depicted 'Red Indians' 😳Overall, one of my favourite Disney films!

Best. Disney. Animation. EVER.
Expected quality of transfer for a HD digital copy, however, arguably the single best current generation of Disney animated films there is to date. Wonderfully animated, with lots of subtle nuances, heartwarming, uplifting and [spoliers] there isn't really a really bad guy in it!Breaks a few Disney staples (Princess doesn't fall for or get rescued by a Prince) and the soundtrack, whilst a bit "samey" is sublime. Watch big. Watch loud. Beautiful.

Excellent film, a joy to watch
Best Disney film I‘ve seen, and I’m not normally a big fan of them. Watched it with my two daughters, 7 and 10 who loved it too, and both are quite ‘sensitive’ types who don’t like too much peril. Brilliant songs, lots of laughing, courage, positive messages for everyone, girl and boys, about being your own best person, and letting your nature be there. I have spent time working with Maori culture previously, and the beauty and power of nature, and caring for our world is not separate from it. I saw that reflected in this film, so one I would definitely recommend for the whole family.
