The Firetail 3 is a low-cut high tech approach shoe with a modern design inspired by action sports.Designed for technical rocky paths, the Firetail 3 offers excellent climbing performance due to its Vibram™ Reptail sticky sole with Megagrip compound – a high-performance, sticky but durable rubber compound also used in rock shoes that gives 25% more traction. Patented SALEWA technologies ensure a very precise fit: Climbing Lacing extends right to the toe for accurate adjustment; the 3F System provides firm ankle and heel support.

Initial review
The first pair was much smaller than I anticipated and the second pair was far too large. I returned them both. It was the third pair that fit...I purchased these for hot and humid weather, and for situations that I need the support of a hiking/approach show. They seem to have enough venting to allow for sufficient air flow and the color, although dark, does not appear to attract the heat (absorb may be a good word). But it is only April and I have not had these shoes long enough to comment on fit, durability, or if they are any good in the hot weather. (If I update this it will be because the shoe impressed me).PROs:-They are comfortable, that is certain. The softness of the sole provides great traction, even on wet pavement (which I discovered this morning).-The lacing system provides for a very secure fit, to include heel placement in the deep cup of the shoe. When I first put these on, (before I laced them up) I thought for sure that I would be sending them back - if my heel is not secure, I will blister terribly which is not something I am prepared to deal with. (My favorite brand Lowa occasionally has a shoe with this issue - changing the insole to a filler (like Superfeet Orange) can solve this problem). However after I laced them up there was no issue. The tether lines around the back of the shoe are not just for looks, they anchor the heel properly.-The tags call this the "Alpine Fit 100% blister free". Salewa has a manufacturer's guarantee for two years against defects and to be blister free. Pretty bold.-These shoes come with an 'Ortholite' (Ortholite.com) insole which are surprisingly comfortable. I have no experience with these soles, I usually prefer the stiffness of the Superfeet insole. The Ortholite is very comfortable.CONs:-The laces are slick and there is no resistance in the eyelets, which makes lacing them up a pain. (When you untie them they do loosen right up without 'unlacing' them which can be a plus').-I prefer a thicker lace to avoid pressure pointing across the top of the foot. There is significant padding on the tongue of the shoe and so far there has not been any issue with this. (Perhaps I just prefer the thicker laces).Initial Impression: I think these shoes are very well made and are very comfortable. I don't foresee any issues as the craftsmanship and production are excellent. Even if you are looking for a casual sneaker for a night out, I think these are a great choice.

Although the shoes like nice and fit very well I have to say ...
I question the production legitimacy of these shoes!I bought these in October 2016. I wear these just about daily and they have not been exposed to any harsh conditions. Although the shoes look nice and fit very well I have to say the quality suffers substantially. As of a few days ago I noticed that the tread is beginning to separate from the sole of the shoe. This is very disheartening as I have had cheaper shoes last way much longer. I'm not sure I will be buying another Salewa product ever again, instead opting for Solomon.UPDATE: I finally got around to taking pictures of the soles after they began to considerably separate from the shoe. I feel the need to repeat that theses shoes are LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD! I feel like perhaps I bought a "knock-off" version through Amazon but hoping that's not the case.

Outstanding Shoe. Great Value.
UPDATED July 10, 2017. Since my original review I have used these shoes on several extended hikes and if I could rate them 6-stars I would. Almost a year after my original review I just completed a summit to 12,600 feet and the shoes performed in outstanding fashion. Extremely comfortable and supportive, and after a year of use, show few effects of wear and tear. I originally purchased these shoes after having purchased the Salewa MS Alp Mid Flow GTX hiking boots which I love after using them on a 7-day hike into the Wyoming wilderness. My feet tend to hurt at the end of the day and I was looking for a shoe that would provide better arch support in particular and generally support my feet better. So far they are exceeding expectations. The arch support is exceptional and the shoes honestly fit like a glove. These are Approach Shoes meaning designed for rock and mountain climbers. The fit is much different than normal shoes. I am using them as a walking shoe mostly and in the gym. The grip and slip resistant Vibram sole is superior to normal shoes. The lacing system is also far superior and the overall support, especially in the toe area, is outstanding. These are not waterproof but a GTX version is available with Goretex fabric. I purchased a women's model for my daughter who is also my hiking partner and she loves hers as well. They fit as expected in all respects.

I really like these shoes - they're first pair of Salewa's
I really like these shoes - they're first pair of Salewa's. I have a pair of Keen's for hiking, and wanted to get a pair of approach shoes for my ascend to Mt Tyndall (class 2-3 scramble). These are perfect shoes for scrambling. That said, after putting about 32 miles total over 4 days span, these are better shoes for scrambling than hiking. On 2 days where we were putting 8 - 12miles hikes (no scrambling), these shoes got a bit tiring on my feet. My feet just felt a bit of "beat-up" at end of day compared to my Keen hiking shoes. They will pass for hiking duty, but I'll say there are more comfortable hiking shoes in the market. But if you're looking to do some ascend/descend scrambling, these will work great.

Great shoe, just be aware of the color.
So far it’s a great show, I can’t speak on durability just yet because I have less than 30 trail miles on these. I ordered the exact same size as I wear every other shoe in and they fit just fine. The reason I’m writing this review is because of the color. I ordered the black / olive shoes. In no world are these shoes even close to looking like the picture listed them as. The shoes I received are 100% grey and black. Just be aware of that, I was a little disappointed with the color as I liked the olive look that was depicted.

My husband was in the market for some good water hiking shoes and went to several sporting goods stores trying on shoes. He found these and fell in love with how comfortable they were. Only problem was in the store they were $130. We hopped on Amazon while in the store, found the exact same shoe for way cheaper so bought them online right there in the store!!! He just wore them on a 13 mile water hike and LOVED them. They were comfy and he didn't get any blisters and could have worn them longer. These are great shoes.

Top class trekking shoes that also look great for everyday.
I love these shoes. Tough, durable, lightweight and breathable. They're a very good looking design as well with sleek form, interesting but not over fussy patterning. The fit is excellent for my feet as the larger toe box doesn't cramp my toes or chafe as many other walking shoes have and I've had no problems at the heel or ankle either. I've spent several long days hiking over moderately rough and muddy terrain now over 3 months of having them and many more days using them as city shoes. Throughout they have felt just as comfortable at the end of the day as at the start - remarkable. They proven easy to clean even when mud caked (allowing to dry and using a soft brush to remove excess mud) just with a clean sponge and warm water. Absolutely class.

Soles are falling off after 3 days.
Avoid buying these. As said above, soles have started to fall off after only a few days!

Buon grip, agilissime, struttura
