PPI PE Civil Reference Manual, 16th Edition, A Comprehensive Civil Engineering Review Book

just started reading it seeking my PE and I think it will do the work and prepare me for the PE exam.

This book is probably the single-most important book you will need for the PE civil exam no matter which afternoon section you take. I took transportation and I found the information on the water resource related topics extremely relevant to the AM section. It also has good information on pavement design and construction which are frequent questions. I even used it for the PM section on a number of problems since the information was more condensed than the actual reference material NCEES specified for certain topics.

I received this book today, opened the package and was immediately a little disappointed with the quality. I thought this was supposed to be a new book. The cover and spine are scratched, a couple corners are bent, and there are stains on a couple of the first few pages (I haven’t looked at all the pages yet). Either way, I will be keeping this because the price was decent and my PE exam is coming up. Otherwise, this is the book I wanted.

Pretty comprehensive and a must have for the PE exam. The index is well-organized compared to many other engineering manuals which is a huge plus. The appendix page numbers in the index are usually off (higher than actual page number by 3-5 pages). There must have been some references removed between versions.

Has everything you need for the Breadth portion of the Civil PE Exam. In my opinion, it is more expensive than it needs to be but it gets the job done. Has an index to look things up. If you make use of that and tabs you place in the book to mark locations of interest, you should have no problem passing the breadth portion. The condition of my book was brand new and so far has showed no signs of falling apart.

I used this religiously while studying. There is a lot of extra information in this, but as long as you know how to find different information within it, you'll be fine. There is no way to go through and understand everything in this. The key is being able to know where to go to get it. Easiest way to do that is to tab the book. Would for sure recommend to anyone taking the exam!

I started to study for the PE out of this book, but when I found out the PE is now CBT (computer-based) and CLOSED BOOK, this became much, much less valuable. The wide range of topics makes it an excellent reference book for an office setting, but it isn't the helpful exam prep and reference that it used to be. There is way, way more information than on the exam and many more topics than the NCEES guidelines. I would wait for a new addition that caters to the CBT if your intent is to use this to study.

I passed the April 2019 PE Civil Structural exam on my first try. I used this book as my main reference to prepare for the exam and during the exam and it was very helpful. Exam Preparation The best exam prep was solving practice questions. I purchased several other books of practice questions, and I used this book while solving them to become familiar with where to find various topics. I reviewed most of the example questions in this book, but they are longer and more challenging than the actual exam. I also tabbed almost every chapter with sticky notes which really helped during the exam to find things quickly. During Exam I used this book on almost every question for the breadth (AM) exam and was able to find what I needed. For the depth (PM) exam, I was mostly using all the structural code books, but I still used this book on a lot of the questions. Book Recommendations For structural topics, this book covers analysis, concrete, steel and masonry pretty well. It would be nice if they added more for bridges and loads on structures and added wood.

If you bring this book and an AISC handbook to the morning PE Civil breadth exam, then you have everything you need, easily accessible. It would have been a nightmare to bring an equivalent amount of information in the form of various course textbooks. It was an excellent resource for the Oct 2019 exam.

No marks but the quality didn't meet my expectation. The cover and spine are scratched, a couple of corners are bent. Either way, I will be keeping this because the price was much cheaper than the regular price and going to study more in depth. Otherwise, this is the book I wanted.
