I bought two different CQR convertible pants and returned one, read and find out why!
My wife and I are planning a trip to Taiwan and SE Asia this spring, so I need lightweight, quick dry long pants that also convert to shorts. I saw these CQR convertible pants on Amazon and wanted to give them a try.Unfortunately, Amazon lumps various styles of convertible CQR pants into a single listing, even though the styles being offered are very different in their details. So since I cannot leave two different reviews for the two different convertible CQR pants that I bought, I've decided to combine both reviews into a single review, where I compare and contrast the two, and explain why I returned one of them.TL/DR: the "Runyun Cargo with Belt" style in Navy are classic cargo pants with generous patch pockets on the thighs. While dark in color they have nice details like tagged leg zippers and I kept them. The "Convertible Cargo W/ Belt " style in Sage are billed as cargo pants, however they only have a single small vertical zipper pocket on the right thigh on the side seam. All of the other pockets are unsecured (no flap or zipper). I returned them.THE DETAILS: the first pair of convertible CQR pants that I bought was the "Runyun Cargo with Belt" style in Navy color. These are classic cargo pants and include a belt which has a hook-type fastener and a wide range of adjustment. The pants have 7 belt loops to keep the belt in place. (I may have to add a D-ring on the left side to hang my collapsible water bottle). The waist fastener button is made of stamped metal and should be robust. There are a total of 7 pockets: 2 side slash pockets, a small horizontal slash pocket on the right front (great for a few credit cards), two cargo pockets, and 2 rear pockets. The RH cargo pocket is secured by a flap with a single patch of Velcro, and the LH cargo pocket is secured by a zipper (that unfortunately is not quite full width). Both rear horizontal slash pockets are NOT secured, which may be an issue for some. The waist is partially elasticized with a belt loop in the middle of each elastic section, to better keep the included belt in place. The YKK zippers work smoothly and are very quiet. The side slash and rear pockets are constructed of mesh material which encourages quick drying. Unlike many other similar products, the zippers of the zip-off legs have ID tags to facilitate quick and easy re-assembly, and eliminate trial-and-error.I expect these CQR lightweight convertible pants to be very comfortable and versatile. My only concern is that the Navy color is darker than I expected. I wish that CQR offered this *style* of pants (Runyon Cargo with belt) in the lighter *Sage color*. THAT would have been perfect.**********Since the "Runyon Cargo with Belt" is not being offered in light gray, I ordered a second pair of CQR pants in the "Convertible Cargo W/ Belt " style in the Sage color. These pants are billed as cargo pants, however they do NOT have the classic large "patch" style pocket with horizontal flap on each thigh. Instead, there is a single smaller vertical zipper pocket on the right thigh on the side seam. There is also a smaller unsecured (open top) "credit card" pocket on the side of each thigh, and the expected slash side pockets. The partially elasticized waistband in secured in front by a stamped metal button. There is a plastic D-ring (yay!) on the left side, and (only) 5 belt loops to keep the included belt in place. The belt is a press-clip type (which I dislike because I always inadvertently lean on something and open it) and has a generous range of adjustment. The two horizontal slash rear pockets are unsecured (no zippers or flap closures). The zippers are not branded as YKK, however they all operate quietly and smoothly. The zippers of the zip-off legs have a nice detail, a special pocket to store the zipper pull. However the zipper pulls DO NOT have ID tags on them to facilitate quick and easy re-assembly, so you may experience some trial-and-error during re-assembly. There are snap closures on the bottom cuffs and partial side zippers, which will greatly facilitate taking off the lower pantlegs without removing your shoes. The styling of these "convertible cargo" pants is sleek, and the lower pantlegs are done well, however I will be returning these pants. Even though they are the right color of light gray, in my opinion there are too many style compromises for use as functional travel pants. Most of the pockets on these pants are small, and unsecured by flaps or zippers. (When I put my admittedly fat wallet into the front left slash pocket, the opening of the pocket flares wide, just begging for a pickpocket to make me a victim.) These pants lack true cargo pockets, and there is only one secured (zipper) pocket, which is also small. They might be good for someone who values style and doesn't have much to carry, but they don't suit my travel needs and so I will be returning them.Too bad, I really like the light gray color...

Great for hiking, theme parks, and travel.
Wore these hiking all over Joshua Tree, shook off the desert dust and hung them up then wore them two days later to walk all over Disneyland and Ca adventure. They dry super fast too. We got drenched on a water ride and 10 minutes later my pants were dry. They stayed comfortable and honestly did not smell after 24 miles walking altogether. I found the size was perfect and love that the pockets don’t bulge out. The belt is also great for the airport because I wore them again for the five hour flight home. The phone pocket is well placed, even though my iPhone sticks out of it a little, the pocket holds it securely and I’m able to quickly grab it for pictures. These pants also pack down and are light.

slightly noisy but functional mid-tier set of convertible pants
noticed this had a bit more of a premium than a bunch of the inexpensive options (but not as pricey as the bigger brands like Columbia, REI, OR, etc) - the features sounded really nice for its price point.overall, these are comfy pants and they are not paper thin. I love that they have labelled left/right zip pulls, the cargo pockets in the back and plenty for folding up the zippered off legs (and I can sit on them without any discomfort (in fact I forget they are there after awhile!)).The belt is functional and removable (this is great as I can use the belt on another pair of convertible pants that didn’t come with a belt!). The D hook off one belt loop on the left side looks to be useful but I haven’t discovered it’s ideal use yet - good to know it’s there. They are admittedly a bit “noisy” - now they aren’t anything close to being as noisy as parachute pants but they make noise as you shuffle your legs (even when you’re wearing just shorts which is mostly how I’ve used them for a few weeks) - it’s not loud but it’s enough to know you’re in these pants and not regular pants. And while we are on the topic of noise, the back cargo pockets are velcro. At first I was concerned about the 64% cotton - when I went to hand wash them, they definitely soaked up a lot of water! I was able to wring most of the water out pretty easily and they did come close to dry overnight. You don’t want the cotton in there if drying in just a few hours is what you’re looking for but overall, it’s fast enough not to consider it a negative. Though be prepared to machine wash them - the odor from probably chemicals is pretty strong compared to 4 other pants I tried. most of it goes away after a hand wash and didn’t go completely away after a cold machine wash with a very mild scent-free detergent.I like the mini pocket on the right - it’s small enough to put my car keys in and tight enough that they don’t fall out. This is important because I noticed if I put my car keys into the zippered pocket on the left leg, it felt “too weighty” (like a pendulum) which was uncomfortable so it was good I could move my car fob/keys to the little pocket on the right. The fly zip is a metal zipper and there’s a metal waist button. The material is heavier than other pants but not too heavy - probably means it’s a bit more durable. However, note that according to the seller the TXP-405 (what I got) is 40g *heavier* than the TXP-404 (pay close attention to “color” - it says “lightweight” and one of the images says “TXP-404 travel series” and has hikers in the top of the photo).overall, you get what you pay for and this is a good mid-tier pair of pants. if you pay less, you’re not going to get as many features and if you pay more, the design and construction and quality of materials (and zips!) will go up.UPDATE (9/26/2023): I docked a star because I ultimately went with REI Sahara convertibles: super deep pockets no phone has gone before, full length zips so you don’t have to take yr boots off, color coded pant zips, YKK zippers for durability, no velcro, lighter and more comfortable, 9" short in-seam to prevent rubbing at knees , quicker to dry, and not noisy to walk in! now it didn’t come w a belt but I have both pants so I just use the same belt for both. totally worth the extra 10 bucks. I use my CQRs for work as they clearly seem thicker and save my Saharas for travel and hiking.UPDATE (1/16/2025): I've been wearing these about twice a week (nothing too crazy, just delivering packages around the hood) and washing them maybe once every two weeks. After 17 months, pants came out torn (at the seat) out of the wash. Of course, it may have been our machine (it's a Maytag) - the pants seem more durable & rugged than they actually are in practice unfortunately. Im a bit disappointed as I really do like these pants but can't see myself getting another pair at this price.

Se pierde el color rápidamente.
El pantalón es casi perfecto, talla, material, ajuste, el único detalle es que el color se deteriora rápido, por lo demás EXCELENTE!

Higher expectations
I choosed this brand because it has a good catalog of products and this pant is announced as the best option for outdoor activities.I took my time reviewing the piece and found that whether it is true that the fabric is good, I'd prefer to have some different details in design.Side pockets are better plain not pleated. You won't put a bulky object there knowing it will be uncomfortable when walking and worse when running.A small front pocket is supposed to be used for mobile devices. I'd locate it on the side or rear with a velcro flap.Rear pockets doesn't have zippered or velcro flaps; at least one of them should.Up to this moment I had not been able to open the left side pocket zipper. Do I have to ask for change?Lastly, by now, A waist accessory is more than a cord; this pant deserves a real belt, doesn't it?
