Work great!
Love these have been using them for 3 years now in a 55 Gal Tank, they have worked so well to control Nitrates, before I used this product I lost fish because Nutrates were too high..Also there less expensive on Amazon than pet stores. Try them, they just pop in your filter,no measuring or messy liquids.

Quick fix
I've been keeping fish ever since I got my first 10 gallon aquarium in the 5th grade. That was 1981! I'm no newbie to the hobby by any means. Because I now keep heavily planted freshwater tanks, the abundant plants absorb much of the nitrates. I still do weekly water changes, but since I dirt the bottom of the tanks (under the gravel) I can't just plunge my siphon deep into the substrate to remove the gunk which invariably causes nitrate spikes. Still, with all the plants and weekly water changes I've got things under control. In the freshwater tanks that is. With my one 55 gallon saltwater reef, things were getting out of hand. No, my tank's by no means overstocked. No, I don't overfeed. Yes, I do weekly water changes. Yes, my tank has more than sufficient live rock. Yes, I run a protein skimmer and it pulls plenty of skim. Yes, I also run Matrix. So tell me why my nitrates stayed at around 100 ppm despite all of this? I would even get so frustrate I'd do 50% water changes EVERY DAY for a week at a time. Nothing worked. Until now. I drop in one filter pack into my backpack filter about every 10 days and with weekly water changes my nitrates are now a more manageable 20 ppm, which is still way too high but a considerable drop from where they once were. Oddly enough, my more sensitive LPS corals don't seem to mind the high nitrates, but the alleged "easy" soft corals have died off with the exception of my Kenya tree. GSP and Xenia apparently need pristine water conditions while ultra expensive LPS can live in gasoline. As other reviewers have pointed out, the telltale sign that the filter pack has done its job and needs replaced is when it's brown, slimy, and smells like rotten eggs.

Magic!
I used to have to do water changes for 5 aquariums every week due to nitrates being around 30ppm.I do not overfeed I don't know what the issue was but putting 1 pouch of this behind the filter media in every tank has a serious impact on nitrates. I can now do 30% water changes every 2 weeks and nitrates still are not as high as they used to be weekly. I'm keeping this stuff stocked.

Not a complete solution, but good for the price.
A well priced solution for Nitrate, but not a complete solution. This will not solve or prevent the need of water changes, but can significantly help with the water quality and reduce water change frequency. For a more complete solution, I'd recommend adding at least one moss ball (marimino) to help (slightly) with chemical imbalance and supplement good bacteria, but really to control algae growth. Also, having one plecco, otto, shrimp, or snail will help with decomposing material, and filing your tank with distilled water at first instead of tap water will significantly help with water quality in combination with these, resulting in better aquarium life and infrequent water changes needed. The product packaging (not amazon packaging) is flimsy and was both crushed and torn when the item was received, meaning I need to store the product in a separate ziplock bag. For the packaging, I reduced the rating by one star.

Really easy to use, works wonders, you still have to do water changes.
Love how easy this product is to use. Make sure you follow the directions. It does work. Even though it works water changes are still important. I have this in 2 of my tanks one was a test tank I use for fish that are sick. I did not water change it and yes water changes are important. Don't worry no fish were in the tank just lots of snails they all lived. Hardy little snails. I did regular water changes weekly in my aquarium with fish and have been testing the water every time I test the tank its perfect. We are in a high ammonia area. That's iowa for you. With all the run off from farms seeping in to our water ways. This product works wonders for this problem. I highly Recommend this product. My fish are happy and healthy thank you so much. 😊

but not like the first time
The first time I used it it was exactly as described. The tank was cloudy and after a week it's suddenly was clear. However, after cleaning the tank completely, The tank got cloudy again and I put another packet in. I expect the same results. However, for some reason it didn't work. I had to start all over again with a fresh tank by cleaning everything and changing the water. Again, after a couple of weeks the water was cloudy so I put another pack it in. This time the packet worked fairly well, but not like the first time. I don't knowfor sure but it seems that when you start with a fresh charcoal filter, the packet doesn't seem to work. In any event, it seems hit or miss

Wow! Crystal clear is right!
My daughter has a 3 gallon freshwater fish tank with 3 fish that we set-up about 4 months ago. I didn't clean it for two weeks and suddenly we had algae. I cleaned the tank but was worried about getting the water clear again and while doing research, I found an ad for Algone. I ordered it from Amazon and put it in with the filter. The water seemed to be getting better, but was still cloudy. Cleaned the tank again 1 week after putting Algone in the filter and replaced it with a new packet since there was algae all over the first one. Changed out about 20% of the water. Next day water was looking better, the day after that it was suddenly really milky looking and we felt like we took a step back & then today, 10 days after adding the Algone to the tank, we turn the light on and the water is completely clear! I am talking sparkling clear. I don't think it's ever been this clear, clear. My daughter was actually a little freaked out and kept asking how the water got so clean, and all I could say was "I don't know, but I am keeping Algone in there from now on!"
