New Arrangements and Duets

Listening to the album whilst reading reviews from reputable music critics (who in the main, pan this new release as uninspiring) and I'm wondering if I'm listening to a different album. This is great! VM's voice is as strong as ever, so are the backing musicians, there's a cool vibe to some of the tracks, or a swing, and the accompanying singers give it everything they've got. Apparently there's a lot more in the vault. They said that about Prince when he sadly left this world. So far those posthumous releases have been a bit of a disappointment. This album isn't.

I saw Van perform, just after the release of this album, with a great band including an expanded brass section. It was excellent and Van was clearly enjoying the performance much more than many I have seen. They did several tracks from the album and that prompted me to buy it. That and the fact that I have all his other studio albums. This one is rather mediocre. Not nearly as exciting as the live performance.Unless you are an avowed fan, there are probably better things to spend your money on. Like seeing Van live or the truly excellent Live at Orangefield album released a few months earlier.

At the moment all of his releases are for the true Van fan.

The new arrangements are excellent, the big band jazz sound suits these numbers. The duets are excellent, Willie Nelson is superb. Like all albums by Van I needed a couple of weeks to really get into each track, but personally for me the album is a joy.

Can't fathom this album out. Is it a big band album? Or a duets album? Or an archive product? Apart from the Willie Nelson tracks the rest is not very clever. Following on from his last superb live album this is very disappointing.

Die CD hat mir durchgängig gefallen, die neuen Interpretationen von einigen Klassikern in Big Band Stil sind sehr ansprechend und sollten in keiner Sammlung fehlen. Die Duets unter anderem mit Willi Nelson sind sehr flott, lediglich das Zusammenspielen mit Joss Stone ist für mich ein Ärgernis, wie kann man diesen Klassiker so verunstalten.. damit meine ich nicht die Stimme von Van… insgesamt eine tolle CD für mich, vielen Dank für die Öffnung des Archives…

Großartige Interpretationen von teilweise bekannten Stücken, die selbstverständlich in jede Sammlung dieses Ausnahmemusikers gehören!!! Ein echter Genuss, weil auch technisch hervorragend.

Ich fange mal mit der Lieferung an. Bei mir geklingelt und dann ohne weitere Info mit sowas wie "Hallo" direkt wieder raus und keine Ahnung wer hier was geliefert hat!?Insofern max. 1 Stern für die Lieferung, aber ja, der Artikel war dann durchaus in meinenBriefkasten.Zum Produkt bzw. dass was dieser durchaus überaus begnadete Musiker zum heutigen Datum veröffentlicht. Eigentlich vielfach alt bekanntes unter dem Deckmantel neu interpretiert, vielfach im "Bigband-Style. Hat in der Gesamtheit nach meiner Auffassung durchaus was von "nochmal Geld abscheffeln" für ein Alterswerk. Die meisten Neuinterpretationen kommen noch nicht mal im Ansatz an die ehemaligen Originale heran und bieten demnach auch keinen "Neuwert". Hier wird versucht einen souligen Bigbandstyle, zwischenzeitlich auch in Verbindung mit sciffel auf den Weg zu bringen.Passt nach meiner Auffassung aber leider nicht! Und auch der Duets Charakter zeigt sich hier nicht wirklich. Durchaus Interessant für Sammler und Jäger die letzten beiden Stücke in der Kombination mit Willie Nelson. Ich bin zwar eigentlich kein Countryfreak aber bei diesen Stücken passt das in angenehmer Weise.Bevor ich dieses Album dann vollständig zerpflücke ...Hier gibt es ein Stück dass durchaus das eigentlich Üble dieses Albums wieder gerade rückt und wer hat hier in der Vergangenheit ggf. nicht Alben erworben, einzig allein wegen eines Stückes?8. Someone like You in der gesanglichen Kombination mit Joss Stone.Nach meiner Auffassung von je her eines der besten Lovesongs ever und in dieser Versionsicherlich als hervorragend zu bezeichnend. Eigentlich das einzige Stück auf der Scheibe wo auch die Bläsersätze wirklich stimmen und zu Pippi in den Augen führen kann.Diese Interpretation des Stückes ist nach meiner Auffassung einfach nur grandios.
