A great read more for children, but Im an adult and loved it!
I had only read one of MM books before (Listen to the Moon) which was suggested by my book club which is more of an adult novel. I thought this might be of a similar vein. This book has a great story and is a very quick read (read it in a few hours on the same day) but is written more for children complete with pictures. A story based on fact of a World War One war hero and his story which you just get wrapped up in and makes it a real page turner.

Excellent story
I'm a primary school teacher and this was recommended by one of my 10 year old students. It's a great story that would tie in with both WW1 and WW2 topics. Michael Morpurgo is a great story teller and the plot is interesting, grabbing your attention with a moral. A great book for children of 9-12 years old.

A Good Read
This novel had many of the loved hallmarks of Morpurgo's writing. The characters were from the working class, were believable, speaking in a vernacular tied to time and place. Other features were that some aspects of the plot were rooted in real events, the ending had a surprise twist and a theme was certainly the pity of war. However, the plot twist was all to obvious and the ending came too quickly.

Mmmmmm!
From an alleged 'true' and fascinating source, M.Morpurgo has fashioned a simple, if largely plot-driven novella aimed, I believe, mainly at the teenage reader/market. Deceptively simple, though...as is much of his writing...adult readers may be engaged throughout and bring to it their own personal experiences of the two WWs. Also, apart from a rather one-dimensional obviousness regarding the title in an episode towards the end of the book, the reason for such a title is unclear...unless that's it, of course!! Easily read in a couple of hours...and with large, double-spaced writing...easy on the eye, too, for those of a certain age!

Excellent choice
I downloaded this on to my Kindle and read it - I was so impressed I then ordered two copies for my nearly 11 years old grandsons and received very positive feedback from them and their parents. As with much of his work this book is just as suitable for young people as for adults - and as always so well written.

Excellent!!
Excellent !!!An interesting adaptation from historical events...and well told. Without giving too much away, the main characters are inside a carriage on a train which is taking cover from an air attack in a tunnel. The images the book plants in one's mind whilst the story is being told in the dark carriage whilst the train is in the tunnel is just excellent !Recommended

This is one of the best books I've ever read!
This book was perfect. The way that this incredible author weaves in the truth with fiction in just ingenious. I would recommend this book to anyone who reads pure decency.
