Quaint, charming, witty, chucklesome- a good weekend read.
Ordered for its interesting title and immediately got onto the (pleasant) task of reading it. Excellent humorous description of the regimented life in an umm a what else but a Sainik School. Having failed in a bid to enter one myself, the book revived the ignominy and rubbed salt in what was a healed wound. Oh, this is the life day-boarders miss/ed. The author, Mr Dalwai, has a charming way with the words. Let’s hope the next one will follow soon, in the unique eloquent, persuasive language of this wordsmith. Compliments to the publishers for the relatively larger, bold fonts and good quality of paper that make the reading less strenuous for the seniors, lovely illustrations embellishing the tales that capture the joie de vivre that every school/ college boy gets to experience with every adventure. A book well worth reading. I liked it, I’m sure you too would.

Nostalgic and inspiring journey through residential school life
"Pickling in a Residential School" by Dr. Ashok Dalawai is a beautifully written memoir that took me on a nostalgic trip back to my own school days. Having studied in the same institution, I found myself deeply connected to the experiences, challenges, and triumphs he so vividly narrates. The book masterfully captures the anxieties of entrance exams, the struggle for academic excellence, and the camaraderie forged in sports and extracurricular activities. Dr. Dalawai’s portrayal of his village resonated with my own childhood memories of Madiwala, a place that has now transformed into a bustling part of Bangalore. One of the most striking aspects of this book is the emotional depth with which he describes his journey—the initial setbacks, the heartbreak of being rejected in the NDA medical exam, and finally, the triumph of cracking the IAS. His perseverance is truly inspiring. This book is a must-read for anyone who has lived the residential school experience or seeks motivation to overcome life's hurdles. Dr. Dalawai's story is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of dreams. Highly recommended!Dr Nagaraj Reddy

Nostalgia overdrive
Time travel is not a myth. Do read this book and you will know that I am right. Having myself lived in a boarding school from the age of 10, this book allowed me to travel back in time and reminiscence my hostel days. The middle school and high school days inevitably become the most memorable days as we grow up. The author has captured this essence in a deep evocative manner interspersed with humour and morals. The chapter where the author lands up in school with little or no knowledge of English language was particularly resonant with me. I had landed up in Kodaikanal with the capability to utter only one sentence - My name is Maltesh. And having been deposited in an international school with 70% were non-Indians, one sentence was not enough. But like the author, I had the love and support of seniors in helping me learn a new language. At times they laughed at my pronunciations and dictum, but for the most part they were very supportive. Subsequent chapters about sports and visits to dispensaries have been graphically composed, that any person with a boarding school experience will immediately relive his yesteryears. That's why I reiterate, time travel is not a myth.

A wonderful nostalgic read
Ashok Dalwai takes the reader on a journey through a young boy's mind and heart capturing events in Sainik School Bijapur (in Katnataka). For the alumni of that time it is a nostalgic journey with many familiar names. Ashok doesn't restrict himself to narrating incidents but delves deeper into the psych. The reader can guage the impact that the idea of a residential military school to develop young children into military leaders and good citizens has had.

A marvellous book for the young and the old...
The author has beautifully painted the canvas of school life. It's a fun read, and anybody can associate oneself with the journey of the author at Sainik School, Bijapur. My young boy is loving this a lot.
