Orion 7395 AccuFocus Electronic Telescope Focuser

I've purchased two of these to use on my refractor telescopes. They've been reliable and easy to adjust during installation. The slow motion controls work great for getting the perfect focus. A little image shift happens when you change direction but that's a condition of the focuser and not the motor. I've been using one for over five years with no issues and recently needed a second for new scope I purchased. Overall a great product for use on refractors that allow removal of the focus knob for installation. Haven't tried any other brands but most items I've purchased from Orion have been good quality and these are no exception.

I installed this on an Orion 8" Astrograph Newtonian telescope. I had to install it on the opposite knob (the one without the fine focus) than the one shown in the instructions due to the placement of a few tiny screw holes required to keep the fine focus knob in place. I had to drill a hole in the supplied AccuFocus mounting plate to accommodate the telescope's focuser thumb lock screw since I had to flip the placement of the mounting plate. It's hard to explain in this review but it comes down to the fact that there is a particular layout of screws on the Astrograph's Crayford focuser which effectively fits perfectly with the AccuFocus mount plate except for the fact that the thumb lock screw hole is flipped since the AccuFocus is installed on the other side (hence the need to drill a new hole).The motor itself works fine though it looks like it sometimes slips a few steps when turning. This may be because I need to tighten the plate which presses the focus rod against the focus shaft but a few youtube videos showed similar slips occurring. This is not a bad thing since I won't be imaging while the motor is turning. I recommend FCUSB from 'Shoestring Astronomy' to control (and power) this motor through USB and software on your computer or laptop. The motor itself is powered by a 9V battery otherwise.

The media could not be loaded. Little disappointing. I saved for this for months. It moves very slow. I use it on the highest speed because the lower speed doesn't do anything. It's better than manual focusing but only just. Not an $89 product. More like a $20. Idk how everyone else got such a great product but the one I received.... not so good.Update: the wires came off the control board later maybe 5 uses. I sent it in to orion for a repair. They never contacted us and we got a refund. And of course, the product was more expensive when we re ordered. We were now out the shipping and the extra cost. Just got it on my scope. It's so weak it won't even turn the focuser. It's faster one direction than the other. It's just awful. Will be returning this one too but not paying the shipping a 2nd time.

I ordered this motorized focuser as I did not want to spend a fortune. I do have a JMI motorized focuser on my main reflector telescope which set me back about $400 as this focuser has many features such as digital readout and computer control. I needed the Orion focuser for my small refractor so I can experiment with prime focus imaging using a Phillips SPC900 and Quick Cam 4000 Webcam. I also experiment with eyepiece projection astrophotography with a digital camera and prime focus with a Canon 450D DSLR camera as well. To do this type of imaging, focus is absolutely critical and manual focusing is difficult to reach precise focus. I do use a Bahitov Mask and now with the Orion motorized focuser I will get darn close to perfect focus. So lets talk about this Orion Focuser....I was able to install this on my Celestron 70mm 900mm focal length First Scope refractor. I was not sure if it would fit as I was prepared to make any modifications to make the Orion Focuser work. To my surprise everything fit perfect! The Coupler that attaches to the telescope focusing shaft fit like a glove, and needed no modifications. The bracket that attaches to the bottom of the focuser on the telescope fit perfect as well! The only thing I had to do was add a thin spacer between the bracket and bottom of the focuser (where the 4 little screws are, but you will only use 2 screws with the bracket) where the bracket attaches. This was done to keep the motor, coupling and bracket in perfect alignment and relieve any undue stress of the gears in the motor. Other then that I was surprised at how lucky I was that this fit my Celestron 70mm First Scope refractor! Before I forget...my refractor has a rack and pinion focuser. I now can achieve exact focus without touching the telescope and having the celestial object being viewed or imaged without wiggle in the eyepiece, camera's or webcam's! This does exactly everything I had hoped. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of 2 things. First the motor focuser on fast speed is slow, but not a big deal as I can loosen the 2 set screws on the coupler and manually get close to focus then tighten them up and have the motor take me to fine focus or I can simply wait it out and let the motor move to focus without touching the coupling screws at all. Not a big deal either way. The other tiny issue is the battery compartment is tight when you add the 9V battery so you have to be careful and not force the battery compartment cover on as you could snap a plastic clip. I was careful and no problem. Orion does supply a sticky strip tape so you put it on your controller and then you can hang the controller on your mount or telescope once you reach focus, this way the controller is not hanging down from the controller cord. I did not use it. Instead I used Velcro on the controller and on my mount and that works 100x better! I just simply unplug the cord from the focuser and hang up the controller on my mount with the Velcro, now its out of the way until I need to use it to focus again. All in all I am very, very pleased. Also the motor is pretty quiet as well. You can't go wrong, even if you have to make some simple modifications. If your looking for an inexpensive but gratifying way to focus, you can't go wrong with this. Oh..comes with a 1 year warranty and it does not come with a 9V battery.Lastly...even though Orion supplies 4 small screws to attach the bracket to the focuser plate, these may not fit for your focuser. Just go to a hardware store or a place like Lowes or Home depot and bring one of your original screws from your focuser plate and get some that are the same diameter and type but that are a little longer to compensate for the thickness of the focuser bracket.UPDATE: Had quite a few chances to test this out and I am 100% happy. Wished I had gotten this sooner. Wow this helps so much with my focus, especially doing astrophotography (planetary, solar and lunar) with my webcam and eyepiece projection with a digital camera! Decided to give it 5 Stars instead of 4.

Was looking for a low cost Electronic Focuser for my Celestron 130SLT, as I was tired of waiting for the shaking to stop every time I adjusted focus. I'm glad I found this and at a reasonable price. It was a very easy install and seemed to work well. After a few cloudy nights, I was finally able to take it out for a test. It works great and I love it. Focus is smooth with a variable speed adjustment, for fine tuning the focus. Absolutely no shake and I'm able to focus in much faster and more clear than before. I consider it a must have.***UPDATE*** It worked great for 6 months. Last night it stopped working. The tiny gear on the motor shaft was slipping. It appears to be attached to shaft with nothing but Superglue. I've re-glued it, will see how it goes when it dries. Really hope it works, I'd hate to go back to manual focusing.***Update*** Repair worked.
