Used to remove particulates from murky/muddy water
In preparation for an upcoming backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon I knew that we would have to use water from the Colorado River to drink. I knew the River was very silty and would easily clog my sawyer filter. One needs to add a flocculant to this water to make the suspended particles stick to each other (to make them heavier than water so they'll sink to the bottom) There appears to be several kinds of aluminum compounds that are used as a flocculant. Water Wizard (poly aluminum chloride) is a well known product among the Grand Canyon rafting groups. It is a little expensive but at the time it wasn't available. It is mixed at a dose that is 80% of the maximum suggested dose. The more common chemical that many water treatment plants use is aluminum sulfate. In my readings, the maximum suggested dose of aluminum sulfate is 50 mg per treated liter of water. I chose to use 80% of the maximum dose so I dissolved 100 mg of this into 125 mg of purified water (used a postal scale to measure and bought water from a grocery store). I had to shake it vigorously and use a chopstick to break things apart in the bottle. It did not dissolve right away (even though the solubility properties of aluminum sulfate indicated that it would easily dissolve). I left this overnight and the next morning everything was completely dissolved. With this solution the dose is one drop per liter (one drop contains 40 mg aluminum sulfate). I initially tried this at home: mixed dirt and clay in one gallon of water, then added 4 drops, shook vigorously then let sit for 30 minutes. It did cause most of the silt to settle but it still looked like pale grapefruit juice. I did this several times with the same result. In the Grand Canyon the Colorado was very silty(looked like chocolate milk due to the high amounts of run off from snowmelt). One of my friends also brought Water Wizard My aluminum sulfate and the Water Wizard seemed to be equally effective. (All 5 of us came to the same subjective opinion) For some reason, the treated Colorado water seemed to be clearer than my water that I treated at home. I did find that the longer that I let the water sit, the clearer the water was. If I let it sit overnight, the water was almost crystal clear by morning. I'm quite happy with my purchase and I learned a lot about this aspect of backpacking

Great Alum Soak for Aquatic Plants
I use this product to give my new aquarium plants an alum soak to get rid of pests before I add them to my tank setup. So far, it has worked great, as I have yet to find any pests (planaria, snails, etc.) in my aquarium.

Exactly as expected, would recommend!
I had never used this compound before but when I needed to tan a sheep hide this was the product needed. It was the weight expected, worked as needed and arrived in a timely manner. Color of this compound is white in a paper bag lined with a coating to prevent moisture. I would recommend this product and seller. Thank you amazon.

Fantastic for treating aquarium plants
Used this product to treat aquarium plants for pests before introducing to my tank. It worked perfectly! Here's my "recipe": 1. Add 1 tbsp of Aluminum Sulfate per 1 gallon of RO/distilled/dechlorinated tap water. 2. Mix until the the aluminum sulfate dissolves. 3. For larger, hardier plants, let soak submerged for ~1 hour. For delicate plants, soak for 30-45 minutes. 4. Rinse the plants in a separate (dechlorinated) water bath thoroughly. 5. Add to aquarium My only critique with this product is the bag's zipper reseal is unusable. Not a huge deal, though.

Excellent for pre-treating contaminated water sources while in the back country
I keep a bit of this powder on me in the back country in case of limited water supplies with too much sediment. I use to pre-trear the water and cause the sediment to fall-out before sending the water through my Swayer squeeze filter, thereby improving the water quality and enabling my filter to last longer.

Jury is still out.
Thickness? How does one rate thickness for alum powder? Anyway, after dosing with coffee grounds all winter, this spring our hydrangea bloomed a glorious shade of blue. Success! Unfortunately, it did not hold. By early summer it was a weak pink. So, it's either lack of aluminum or lack of acidity, and massive additional coffee grounds did not bring it back. I purchased this product to add both aluminum and acidity. After dosing the plant repeatedly, the weak pink has developed to what one might call real pink with a purple tinge. Maybe it needs more? Dosing will continue, as the color has moved a little in the right direction, but so far the results have fallen short. Three stars for now, since it apparently did something, but based mostly on hope for the future.

Works GREAT!
I did not start amending my hydrangea early enough with acid in order to turn it BLUE this year. I added this product every week or so for a little over a month and it made it sort of blueish. Next year, I'll start the process prior to the formation of flower buds to expect a true BLUE flower.
