Smoke is light and sweet
Good quality. Lights easily and burns hot and long. The flavor the smoke imparts is light and sweet. One thing, the size of the individual pieces is pretty large. The pieces vary but most are larger. If you're using something like a small yakatori grill be aware.

I have no idea how to effectively light this stuff

Great paired with a Lodge Sportsman Grill!
I am using this with a Lodge Sportsman Grill and it is freaking awesome stuff. I have been saving the leftover coals in a Lodge cast iron dutch oven and can reuse them 3 or four times doing 30 minutes burns.

Great Binchotan
Excellent quantity for the value, excellent burn time. It was easy to use a stove or a blowtorch in order to light them, and we have already grilled a few times. They burn slowly and evenly, and give our bbq a delicious flavor. The smoke is also nominal, we grilled in our urban backyard with little issue. I would highly recommend for the ~$45 I paid for it, however it looks like the price is creeping up.

Smokey
Never seen bincho smoke so much when lighting. Burns fine though after it gets hot. Not recommended for indoor grilling or under eaves as the smoke is really intense.

Supreme quality binchotan/charcoal, works great, product of Indonesia; not cheap tho
This Bincho-Yaki Hero “Premium Binchotan All-Natural Hardwood Charcoal – Century-Old Kiln Carbonized Techniques – Smokeless, Long-Lasting, High Heat, Low Ash – Ideal for Japanese Style Yakitori & Outdoor BBQ (11, Pounds)” is a supreme charcoal product. It claims to be “binchotan”, a very specific type of charcoal from Japan produced with a very specific process; these are made in Indonesia, probably with the same process (may or may not be of the same type of wood). The resulting product (this one) does work like Japanese binchotan (I had a lot of experience with Japanese binchotan, and binchotan that are produced around the world), the aroma of the grilled food may be a tad lacking, but really not by far, I doubt anyone would be able to point out the subtle difference. The look and size of these charcoal tho, is not as uniform as the most premium binchotan that I got from Japan (they are all uniformly cylindrical between 1 to 2 in diameter), while this product do varies in size with blocks and square chunks, and quite a bit of broken chunks and pieces. All in all, this is still a premium product, that you would need to pay a premium for it, while it does perform (some of the best performing charcoal you can find).Thank you for reading this review, I hope that this review & the pictures are helpful to you in support of your purchase decision.
