Autobots Starter Set

Easy to pickup and easy to play! Basic card collecting theme with great artwork makes this a excellent trip down memory lane; and a great action play for their kids!

These were a great price and a great gift for my nephew.

Every time I pull this game out I hear the old 80's theme music playing in my head....but anyways, you're probably reading this to find out if this is worth picking up. So for all the people with short attention spans, it's worth buying. Now for the longer version (and the caveats) to that statement. This is the first starter released in the Transformers TCG. So right away you know several things. First it features your favorite toy robots. And it's also a trading card game. So in other words you will need to buy multiple packs and still won't end up with a full collection. So let's look at this product from 3 perspectives. First we will look at it from the average board gamer's, then the average TCG player, and finally from the person who just collects Transformers stuff. THE AVERAGE BOARD GAMER's PERSPECTIVE: So if you are a board gamer I can't say you will find this very enthralling. While you will probably find it fun, you will also find it incredibly "luck" driven. Random card flips. And to be honest the set doesn't really support 2 players. Or even give you the real rules! What you get is a 40 card deck with two of each card and 4 Autobots. Interesting thing about the game is EACH player needs a 40 card battle deck and you can build a team worth 25 stars (for two players you have to split the Autobots so you don' get even near the 25 points you can build your team with!). So you are literally getting half the game. And it's Autobots versus Autobots! No Decepticons in sight! And if you stop here, it's simplistic and frankly boring. So I don't think for the average gamer this is worth picking up barring whether or not you are a hardcore TF fan. THE TCG PLAYER: Five stars straight up. This is a usable deck. You get 2 good Autobots. And some decent battle cards as well. Buy this and you can play against a friend right away. And as you add to the game you'll find the strategy grows and there is more skill to this game than first met the eye.....pun intended. THE TRANSFORMER COLLECTOR: Foil oversize cards are sweet. Some of the artwork looks pretty retro. So that's cool too. Worth buying! As you can see I gave it 4 stars (it's really a 3.5, but I rounded up) so you know which camp I'm in! Great game and a great addition to the TCG. If at first it seems a little simplistic, buy a couple booster packs or get some cheap singles online. It's worth trying out. Roll out!
