Q: What is the recommended bait?

Peanut butter. Can't go wrong with peanut butter. Catches mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, flying squirrels, you name it - it never fails. Just tonight I caught 6 flying squirrels in the roof, no more than 10-15 minutes each, using peanut butter bait. The thing about peanut butter is they have to stay there to eat it. Other bait, like seeds, dog kibble, cheese, and hot dog slices, they can pick it up and carry it away, often without triggering the trap. Peanut butter sticks right there - they have to work on it. - A jar will last forever too. I've kept the same jar in the garage for 5+ years. Still yummy! (to critters).

You didn’t do anything wrong. The trap’s door latch is poorly designed. To work properly the trap has to be secured so it cannot be tilted or roll over after the door has been sprung (closed)
