Q: why is there an asterisk next to the noise reduction rating (NRR)* ? I have used page search to look for the accompanying fine print and there is none

My opinion is the decibal rating is different in a controlled environment vs in the field.

Q: Can you hear birds through them?

These are not sound cancelling earmuffs, so I would say you should be able to hear sounds, but the noise will be decreased. Please contact the 3M Techline at 800-243-4630 with questions. Thank you.

I'm sure they would. I work out and, having worn them for other things, can tell you that they'll stay on. And, I think they're comfortable. Very nice for the price. If you think you'd like to wear something like this at the gym...go for it.

Q: Why does it require to verify I am a professional/contractor?

I'm no expert, but judging from the low NR rating, my guess is that these would not prevent hazardous levels of noise in many circumstances.
