solid self.
I got to listening to soil because a neighbor told me I would like it after learning of my tastes and he was right.I was getting into drowning pool a few years ago,so this was a natural step after DP picked up their lead singer. If you like good solid sensible hard rock, you'll like drowning pool.

below average
Soil changed singers on this album, and everything fell flat. Nothing here is terrible, but there isn't much to lift this beyond the muck of 10,000 other hard rock albums.

4.0/5.0
Born into a nu-metal scene, SOiL managed to captivate their audience with growling vocals, hard hitting basslines, drumbeats and rhythmic guitar work. The success of SOiL's second full length Scars meant they continued and released their third full length, re-de-fine. re-de-fine had its memorable songs, 'Remember', 'Pride' etc.. but it lacked some conviction that Scars had.A 'dispute' with former vocalist Ryan McCombs left SOiL with no singer and following, no record label. In an all out perseverance to continue SOiL, Tim, Shaun,Tom and Adam were joined by AJ Cavalier and began work on 'True Self'.True Self hits hard, from the beginning, 'Fight For Life' breathes a new sound, with more emphasis on the instruments compared with the previous albums. We get a very similar 'halo' style drum beat in a few of the songs on the album, but more double bass and menacing guitar solo's.Cavalier's vocals have certain simlilarities to McCombs, perhaps more fierce and we hear in the lyrics subtle negative links to the former singer in 'Forever Dead', the heaviest song on the album.True Self is definately worth a listen, its different to the old soil, it has a metal edge that is more loosely defined by the scene that created the band. Cavalier adds a quality to the band that McCombs couldn't, with recent efforts, True Self is their best album, but we should expect more from the Quintet from Chicago, they are still alive and still metal.

The real classic
While many say Soil with RYAN era is the band's finest moments I would say True Self hangs right with any of those albums. The obvious new addition of AJ CAVALIER gave the band a more well rounded sound from being heavy as well as even more melodic.Songs like "Hear Me" are more mature than most of the bands past tracks. The guitar riffs of Shaun Glass & Adam Zadel are on fire and prove the band is firing on all cylinders. If you want TRUE rock look no further as I know this is a hidden gem.

Not bad, but not that good either which isn't that bad
I saw Soil the other night and I'm not going to lie, they really didn't impress me all that much. The crowd was waiting to go nuts and they just didn't come through like Scott Baio did every week on Charles in Charge. I like the whole hard rock scene because it's my thing, but this was weak. It's hardly a ground breaking effort. So you want a groundbreaking act? Let me introduce you to asschowder. Asschowder was a hard rock band I fronted in East Gretna that pretty much laid the blueprint for the hard rock bands of today. How did asschowder get it's start? It's really a remarkable story. Kroll was extremely poor and lived in the signal hill section of Omaha. His family could not afford a washing machine so they did laundry on a washboard in the backyard. After hearing some Falco, Kroll knew music was the way out of the S hill. He started playing the washboard with a flair never seen. Kroll and I hung even though he was poor(I'm not stuck up). I was already known as the best frontman/accordian player on the Gretna scene. I knew Burns through a Bingo club our grandparents were in, so I had the best keyboard player in the midwest aboard. We were still missing a drummer, lead guitarist and bassist. A ray of light then came in our lives. Jabs was up visiting his uncle and heard through the grapevine that a supergroup was going to form and he followed the signs to Omaha. J-abs played lead/bass guitar and drums at the same time along with singing backup in a band called Chuck's tomb in Slidell. We all got together at Millard Plaza and played an impromptu gig that drew 3,500 people to Godfathers pizza. It was clear at that point that this band would truly change music, but we didn't have a name. When we return, the story of how a trip to long john silver's would change hard rock music forever.Welcome back. At this point we have a groundbreaking band without a name. I loved Long John Silver's. Still do actually. The four of us were in line at LJS and I'm ordering up a fish and more combo when Burns looks at this girl in the restaurant and says she has a choice ass. At that moment, the guy asked if I wanted to add some chowder to my combo. J-abs took off to the exit and started ringing the bell like a banshee and yelled, "AAAARGGGGHHHH, the name of me band will be Asschowder!!". There it was. We were asschowder and music was now changed. We wore the cardboard LJS hats and eyepatches at shows and embarrassed everyone playing with us. It was thrash meets polka meets late 60's grunge. It's everything your band wanted to be. We started touring in our modified bus. We got a short bus from the millard school district and painted a donkey eating a bowl of chowder on the back. We airbrushed treasure chests on the side and put 26" spinners on the tires. The game was on and you wish you could've been there. What a great story.

Awesome return
Soil has returned to give metal a much needed shot of grownup aggression. First off Ryan is a better singer than A.J. But A.J. does a great job on the new record. I have always loved that soil writes lyrics from an adult point of view. I'm 34 years old so screaming about mommy and daddy holds no use for me. Like their masterpiece Redefine ( greatest love song ever with lyrics that will make you cry) this cd has the awesome pick me up asking your wife, child, or both if their be there when the world goes wrong. Other standouts included true self, last chance, jaded, and forever dead with guest vocals from burton c. bell (fear factory)! One last thing you have to admire how soil lost their singer and still managed to beat drowning pool to getting new music to the public.

Not Good
After the departure of Ryan from the band I was reluctant to buy this album. However the reviews seemed positive so I bought it anyway. I was shocked. The music isn't all that bad but the vocals are. No offence to the new guy but he cant sing. It seems as if he is trying to copy Ryan and its just not working. The only half decent song on the album if the title track True Self.Take my advice and avoid this album, even if you are a devoted Soil fan like me, you will be disappointed. Stick to Scars, Redefine and even Throttle Junkies. They are far superior. If you want to hear new music from Soil, try checking out Drowning Pool's new album (when its released) with Ryan singing. Going by their latest song "No More" its gonna be great.
