I'm impressed. I paint these myself with animals and I have pretty high standards for nested wood pieces. These were beautiful. There were no cracks or chips. Each piece was smooth and the 2 pieces fit perfectly. They tend to be tight, but I'd rather they be tight (I can always sand the joints a little) than too loose. I live in west Michigan and the climate can be a little dry. Wood products from other parts of the country/world can crack upon arrival. Not so with these. Wherever they're made must be similar climate. I'm very happy with this purchase.

The dolls are of good quality, not Chinese, made in Europe, which pleasantly surprised me. The dolls are smooth and open well. The paint lay on them evenly.

I highly recommend wearing gloves when handling the unfinished pieces ESPECIALLY if you’re buying these as a craft for children. The wooden pieces themselves are fine, some of the pieces on mine came with small imperfections such as indentations, and a surface-level crack on one of them, which wasn’t ideal but it’s at least fixable. Over all they are decent quality for the price and I’m satisfied with my purchase. These were absolutely coated in sawdust upon arrival, I’m someone who’s used to working with unfinished wood but these pieces were exceptionally messy in my opinion. I immediately got a microscopic splinter in my hand when I first touched them, they needed extensive dusting before priming, and I still had bits of sawdust clumping up in my primer which will need to be sanded. If I had it to do over again I would have blown the dust off with compressed air outside before even considering trying to prime. Over all the product is fine for the price and the pieces are sturdy and nicely shaped, but due to some of the imperfections in the wood and how messy they were upon arrival I removed a star.

My grandson loves dinosaurs so after a few drawing lessons - we took our time to draw a variety of dinosaurs on each nesting doll blank and then painted them. For 7 years old he did a great job & was quite proud of himself. The soft wood made it very easy to paint. We used both water colors and markers. I bought 4 more to gift my other grandsons & nephews for Christmas. I have a friend who said she can't wait to gift to her artistic 12-year old to give it a whirl. Actually I think these would be enjoyed by all ages!

I decided to add an update. Should have done this some time ago but finally getting around to it. I used artist-grade colored pencils and Micron to create my set and loved this wood to work on. Both the pencils and pen go on well because to wood is so well prepared. I am know going to get another set and make some more! Each piece of the Matryoshka is sanded beautifully and there are no knots or glaring imperfections. They are already lightly marked with a small pencil line so you know where the tops and bottoms should line up. They were packed in bubble wrap in a very nice and sturdy box. I am a colored pencil artist and am finishing a set that has wood that's nowhere near the quality of this one so I'm looking forward to working with this. I would definitely recommend this product!

The quality of the fit and sanding is great, but some of the dolls are shaped like bowling pins and you don’t know which you will get. The first time I ordered this product it was great (see painted picture), the second time I ordered two and one had a decent shape but the other had no distinct head (see unpainted picture). I returned it and they sent another more bowling pin shaped one. It was slightly less awful than the first and I was tired of returning things, so I kept it, but be aware the shape doesn’t always match the product pictures unfortunately.
