Love that it’s Magnetic
This is a stellar chess and checkerboard set! I wanted something that we could take with us on vacation that my kids could even play in the car. This is perfect because of the magnetic quality of the pieces. My kids can each be in their seats and we can set this Between them, and they can play checkers or chess because the pieces will not slide around on the board. This is an awesome concept and I’m so glad I got it. The board itself is a really nice. It is made of a good quality wood. And I like that it folds in half so it is compact and although the pieces fit nicely inside. It’s really pretty as well because the board is just colored with light and dark shades of wood, which is really nice. It’s very sturdy and will not get damaged easily. I think this is a great value for the money because we will get a lot of use out of this. Aside from vacation, I can see us taking this to the beach or if we go out for a picnic at the park. It’s just an easy way to travel with these games without worrying about pieces lying all over the place.

Great Value, Durable Set for Family Fun
At $24.99, this wooden magnetic chess and checkers set is a solid value. It’s perfect for weekends at the cabin—everything tucks neatly into its own storage slot inside the folding board, so nothing gets lost and it comes with a games manual in case you're new to chess or checkers and need help with the rules of play. The kids love playing checkers during the day, and once they’re in bed, the adults break out the chess. I like knowing that when the kids are old enough to learn chess, this sturdy little workhorse will still be around. Honestly, the kids enjoy putting the pieces back in their individual slots more than actually playing (future Bobby Fischers, they are not), but that will change with time... I hope! The magnets on the chess pieces work well, and it makes sense that the checkers aren’t magnetized—it keeps them sliding smoothly across the board without issues when “kinging.” My only small complaint is that I wish the case had a leather strap handle for easier carrying. Other than that, it’s a great buy, well-made, and a set I’d recommend for families or casual players.

Fun for travels
This chess board is very well made the pieces each have their own slots to be snuggly fit into. I have experienced if I jumble it around a bit they can fall out of place as the only con. The magnetic feature is probably the greatest of all, to avoid pieces being knocked or moved, in the event someone hit into the board. Feels smooth the pieces are wooden with a nice shiny finish. The fact it closes with metal buckles makes it a great traveling board. Came with instructions on how to play checkers as well for those just beginning or wanting to learn how to play both chess and checkers.

Solid Set with a Few Minor Drawbacks
4.5 starsThis wooden magnetic chess set is well-made, portable, and a great value for the price. The 15-inch board is a comfortable size, folds up neatly, and the magnetic chess pieces stay put—even if the board gets bumped or tilted. See the photo of the board at a 45-degree angle! I really like that the pieces each have their own storage slots and that it even comes with two extra queens, which is a thoughtful bonus. That said, there are a couple of things worth mentioning (hence the .5-star deduction). The foam padding inside the storage slots gives off a noticeable chemical smell at first, and it may take a few weeks to fully dissipate. Also, the latch pins on the outside of the case stick out slightly. If you place it on a softer surface like a wooden table, there’s a chance they could scratch.Overall, though, this is a sturdy, attractive, and very practical chess set for home or travel. With just a little care, it’s a set you’ll enjoy for years.

Checkerboard is MDF, printing is sloppy, checkers aren't magnetic. Not luxurious in my opinion.
Mrs Aloha Friday and I were so excited to get this set. Though we've been married for over 25 years and played a zillion board games, cards and puzzles, we've never tackled chess. Mrs AF doesn't know how, and we thought it might be healthier for our relationship that I not attempt to teach her...;o) When we saw this though, the temptation was too great, and we decided to risk it all. Unfortunately, we still may never know if our marriage can handle a game of chess!TAKEAWAYS:- The checkers pieces aren't magnetic. The chess pieces are, but the magnets aren't strong.- There is a layer of particle board in a faux brown wood finish printed with the white checkerboard pattern layered over the real wood case. You can see what it really looks like in our photos and in the manufacturer's 2nd product photo. Their first product photo isn't accurate. In real life, not only is it unattractive and obviously fake, the paint job is sloppy and the surface scratched. We took several pictures of it. Could it just be our set? Sure. Just as likely it's not.- The case needs a carrying handle or a slipcover/bag. You'll need a bag or some sort of strap or you'll be carrying it under your arm. It only has the simple hinged buckle clasps, no lock or heavier latch, so carrying it by itself could be risky. Not to mention, without any protection, since the checkerboard is exposed, it would take the brunt of everything during your travels.- With the case open and turned upside down with the checkerboard facing up to play, the pieces stay in their foam cutouts and don't fall out. It feels a little odd at first, but they seem to stay securely and didn't give me any trouble.- The pieces themselves appear hand carved, and that is the saving grace. They look like traditional imports, and are nicely done. Unfortunately, not enough so to make up for the case and overall concept that was better in theory than in practice. The hand carved pieces sitting on manufactured particle board just ruins the whole experience.Hope the company can improve this item. With the printing more finessed and done on the solid wood itself, magnetic chess pieces, and a handle or slip cover bag, this could be worth the price, currently at just under $38.
