Helical Piles: A Practical Guide to Design and Installation

EXCELLENT PUBLICATION
I must congratulate Howard Perko on his recent publication. In my opinion, it is the first publication that covers all aspects of helical steel screw piles in a manner that is straight forward, practical and based on experience but at the same time carries the academic creditability of a reference book.During the course of ten year business specialising in screw piles in New Zealand we have completed over 350 static compression load tests and a similar number of tension tests. Howard Perko's book generally supports most of the design criteria, test results and installation methods we have tried and tested. This book goes a long way to elevating helical screw piles to an internationally recognised main line piling system.JOHN BUSH CP Eng.PILETECH - NEW ZEALAND

Very Informative, Useful Info Source
This text provides a comprehensive history, thorough design overview, and lots of detail and background for application and selection of helical piles. This is a great addition to the library and essential reference book for designers, engineers, owners, and contractors. I'd give this 20 stars if that were possible. Outstanding text, great reference.

Good technical book, with no competition for helical piles

Poorly made book, good info
The book is full of very useful information regarding helical piles. However, the paper and printing method used in the production of the book is very poor. It looks as if someone printed the book at home, bound the pages, and shipped it out. Should’ve been much less to make up for the lack of quality in the product.

1-STAR for POOR PRESENTATION on an important topic
BEFORE PURCHASE - For a $103 book, “Helical Piles: A Practical Guide to Design and Installation” should include more than just the table of contents. There should be pages included that show the quality of the photos and illustrations and the depth of detail that’s included.AFTER PURCHASE – It was the bright and colorful cover that first appealed to me with close-up, detailed photos of pile installations. Based on those cover photos I anticipated the book to include similar images that would be helpful in the design and construction of foundations that utilized helical piles. Unfortunately, all images within this book are half-toned black and white photos, few of which are close up detailed images, and none with descriptive narratives, just one-line captions. My major complaint with this 500+ page book is that it’s based on the 2009 International Building Code (IBC), which is now antiquated compared with the current 2021 IBC, and the expected 2024 IBC upcoming version. The book is strongly geared toward structural engineers with multiple charts, graphs and diagrams that don’t mean much to anyone except my structural engineer consultants. As a licensed architect in the State of Florida, I cannot say that after my 5-day cursory review I would personally find this book to be useful to me. If this book were $30-$50 I would likely keep it as a reference, but at $103, there’s not a chance. When I ordered this book, it was listed as the last one available. Once delivered, I noticed that there is now a disclaimer stating, "Only six left in stock - order soon!" Suddenly, the publisher has released a few more at the same high price. I suppose they were attempting to justify the high price when I ordered because there was “only one left”, and I took the bait. With six now on the shelf they should be no more than $79 at the most.

Very basic book. For somebody that started working with screw piles, I already notice that if you want to design scientifically a screw/helical pile, you shouldn't buy this book. It doesn't cover design deeply. 2 starts because it is the only one in the market. If somebody knows something decent, please tell me.

The only text book available for purchase
It is the only academic text book I have found about 'helical piles/anchors'. When I was studying the bearing capacity for piles, I was not impressed because it didn't have any solved example for this section. Overall, I like this book and am enjoying learning from it
