Item Length String:8 Inches  |  Item Width String:[ N/A ] Inches  |  Item Thickness String:[ N/A ] Inches  |  Coarseness Rating:Multiple  |  Part Number:21860N The Nicholson combination rasp/hand file (also called 4-in-hand) has a half-round shape with American pattern rasp-cut teeth on half of the round and flat sides, double-cut American pattern teeth on half the flat side, and single-cut American pattern teeth on half the round side. The rasp-cut teeth are for aggressive removal of wood or soft materials on straight and curved surfaces. The double-cut teeth are for rapid removal of material on straight surfaces with a rough finish. The single-cut teeth are for finishing, sharpening, and deburring on curved surfaces. The file has teeth on both ends to accommodate the variety of styles. Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Worst file I've ever bought. Shame on Nicholson for stooping this low, if it is genuine...
Wow this is the most disappointing Nicholson file, ever. I bought this to replace an old 4-in-1 I have, but this one is so dull it can barely cut even relatively soft woods. I still can't believe how bad this thing is... Could this be a counterfeit Nicholson? I hope so.

Sad to say...poorly executed/inspected.
Nicholson brand tools have been one of my "go to's". I've found the last two files to be sub-par compared to the older ones I own. I do note these last two files are no longer made in the USA as some believe (now Mexico). This particular file came with the round face fine grind missing along one edge (right side in photo) and incomplete/sloppy on the ends. The flat face fine grind was poorly executed, superficial at best, and offered almost no purchase to the touch (note contrasting grind far end vs near).

Compact in useful! Great for the hobbyist!
I needed several files and rasps for my toolbox and this tool fits the bill very well. I do some small time woodworking and wanted to have some options for shaping wood. I have used all four sides of this tool and they all work well. Yes, the smaller size does mean I have to take more passes on the work but the space saved in my tool box makes it worth it. If I had a bigger shop with more space I would invest in full size files and rasps in different sizes. But until that time this guy works well and does 90% of what the full size ones would. Recommended.

Fine teeth are not sharp
Poorly manufactured. coarse teeth aren't aligned or sharp. Fine teeth are not sharp. The entire file looks like a reject.Shame on Nicholson for putting such junk.

Dull and worthless
This rasp is one of the most worthless pieces I have ever purchased. It is so dull that I couldn't use it for anything. I will report this to Nicholson and try to find out if this seller is pawning off fakes as the real deal. I have old Nicholson rasps that I've used for 20 years and they're still sharper than this crap.

Nice hand file and rasp with both flat and round
Nice hand file and rasp with both flat and round. Compact option for would be good for portable tool kits, camping, bushcraft etc. The file teeth aren't perfectly formed in places otherwise this would've been 5 stars. Still works, just not as effectively as it would with fully formed teeth.

It's okay.
It's okay. My dad uses it. I guess, he likes it. Harder to clean though since I used it on plaster for my sculpture class. My professor recommend to use it.

Typically good Nicholson quality in a hand sized tool with 4 options. This isn't something I reach for often however when I need it, it's indispensable.
