Q: Is this ink made of animal glue? Just realised that's what traditional sumi ink is made of and that freaks me out a lot

To my knowledge Sumi ink is a carbon based ink or was in the past from burning wood rather like charcoal

Q: Does this smell funny when you use it?

I've never had my nose close enough to my ink pot to notice a smell so I can't say with confidence that it does or doesn't smell. I've never noticed.

Q: why is this so expensive? It's more than 10x that of other brands and seems same as the Kuretake brand which is about £25.00. Is it much superior?

Japanese inks are always more expensive as they are better quality but Kuretake Calligraphy ink is superb and I use it all of the time so save yourself some money and buy Kuretake

Very thick ink.

As a relative beginner, I found this ink a little hard to handle. It was very thick and rather blobby. However, after adding a few drops of water it became more manageable.

simply best ink!

As far as I know, it's the best black ink you can find in the market.. as a calligrapher I have tried many different inks for traditional calligraphy and this one is definitely the best considering different aspects.. Obviously you must learn how to work with it.. on which paper, how much distilled water mix with it if needed, etc.

Produces a nice deep black, may need to have some water added as it is quite thick and can dry out. Good value for 180ml.
