Improved magnets
I compared the magnet strength of these Playmags, some Magrific tiles, and MagnaTiles. All three brands had magnets with comparable strength. Since some of the older reviews complain about the lack of magnet strength of this set, I believe the manufacturer has successfully addressed the problem. You can confidently buy this train set without worrying about weak magnets.Although a child could use this set independently without any other magnet tiles, I think this set is more enjoyable if the child has other magnet tiles. We use squares and window tiles from other sets when building our train--particularly the locomotive. The best part of this set is the very sturdy train car bases The wheels move freely, and they appear to be very durable. Not that I recommend using these as roller skates, but I do think if a creative child did stand on the train bases, they would not break.

Mixed very well with my Magnatile set.
My 7 year old grandson loved it. He built all sorts of things on top of the train cars. Excellent products.

Good addition, but need more pieces to play alone
The interlocking rolling cars are great. My son immediately decided it was an animal train and put up the gates around the cars to keep in his little toy animals... and then promptly ran out of gates. There are 16 gates included, so you'll be able to make a box around two and a half cars. My son was disappointed. So I would say as a stand alone set it leaves something to be desired. If you already have a bunch of magnetic tiles though, this would be a great addition. I've played with another brand of tiles and these did seem a bit weaker than I remember. My son was getting a little upset that he kept knocking them over with his hand by accident, but he's not quite three so that's probably to be expected.
