Q: Is this gen5 version compatible with z-wave devices in the usa ? i don't want to order something with the wrong frequencies.

Yes. U.S. Frequency. Working with all my devices. Controlled by Open HAB.

Q: Can this be used instead of something like a smartthings hub if i just use z-wave devices?

For anything z-wave, you need a controller. Whether it's a smart things hub or a PC using Openhab with a z-stick. If you don't you can only use the blue light up button to physically turn the device on and off.

Q: Can i just plug it into my router?

No. The Z-stick needs a computer to pass program instructions to it via the USB port. There are Z-Wave hubs that can be plugged into your router, but hubs lack the flexibility to handle variables the way a computer can. The Z-stick allows your computer to run the network for you and you can really fine tune how everything behaves with a good computer program.With a hub:* turn the lights on at sunset* turn the lights off at 11pmWith a computer-controlled Z-stick:* Turn on the lights roughly 90 minutes before sunset on the east side of the house, ramping them up from 0% light to 100% light over 30 minutes so no one notices the lights coming on to fill in the growing shadows. Turn on the lights on the west side of the house roughly 30 minutes before sunset, ramping them up from 0% light to 100% light over ten minutes.* Around 10PM, slowly dim the lights to 50% to relax everyone because bedtime is coming. Turn off all lights in any unoccupied rooms. Bring lights up to 30% in the master bedroom. After 11PM, when there has been no one moving around in the house, dim the lights to 0% for the night. Dim the lights in the Master bedroom to 0% five minutes after motion in that room stops. Though, if any motion is detected by the motion sensors around the bedrooms between 1AM and 30 minutes before sunrise, bring up the hall lights to 5% to make it easier to find the bathroom.
