Q: Has anyone tried this paper with Inktense pencils? Wonder how well that would work.

I'm anyone, so I tried it. At first blush, the dry pencils take very well to the mildly toothy surface. I am able to pretty much bury the black with a few layers of color. On to the water test, going over areas with both a damp and a loaded brush the colors muted around +/- 50%, with thicker layers remaining strongest. I only really saturated a small area, about a square inch, but got no sign of buckling or fuzzing of the surface. Adding more layers (I went to three in this test) was good as well. I should note that this is a somewhat "blue-black" and will push yellows toward green and reds toward purple, especially when wet. Overall the 300gm paper holds up well and the combination is fun.

Q: Is this drawing pad good for drawing and sketching with sketching pencils as well as blending and layering with colored pencils?

The Strathmore 400 series Mixed Media colored paper works very well for me with water color pencils.

Q: is this paper archival safe?

Although there are no universal standards in regards to what makes a paper archival, there are some generally accepted properties. In addition to being acid free, the paper should contain no groundwood or unbleached pulp, meet strict limits on metallic content and be free from optical brighteners which artificially make the sheet whiter. If you are looking for the ultimate in permanence, we recommend acid free surfaces made with 100% cotton. Papers in our 500 Series line such as 500 Series Drawing, Bristol, Museum Mounting Board, Illustration Board, Charcoal, and Mixed Media are all 100% cotton and acid free. With that, the Strathmore Black Mixed Media isn't made with any cotton.
